Right..so, in the 'old' times..perhaps a year ago...
As a 'Zero', (or one that had all his characters wiped out, as in me), I went to mine silver...with my starflier, made a little money, to get a rhino, used that to keep mining silver, and then to a camara, which I traded diamonds and all till I got my transport (the..uhm...the universal one used by all factions..forgot it's name, 'Gull' ?). Then started making more money, went up to a Train and so on, made my cash, my characters, joined factions, more characters, became the 'Hero'.
So..I've been thinking..., what would happen if I lost all my accounts/characters again.
Considering the new /restart commands and all...it must've changed..so, how does one go from Zero to Hero in our current .85 time ?
Then you don't get the idea of how things running here. For newbies .. it's mining/trading.
In case of wipe (which I hope won't happen) most likely I would pirate my way from Legionnaire up to Titan. Would be fun. Huh, also I think no-one is limiting me to do so now D: But in the other hand, then I have other chars to play with..

Pure luck.
Sure there's a basic formula for getting attention from the masses, but going from 'zero to hero' really just boils down to quality of your story's process & being able to explain your characters past, thereby enticing people to become emotionally invested & care about what happens in your character within the present.
i would pirate. i used to trade in small ships, but i find it dull and boring to start with. therefore, i would pirate my way up. until you get a decent ship npc pirating is the way, and even after that it is pretty profitable, if you know what to pirate and where. since npc trains are just duck sitting at the jumpgates / trade lanes.
Computer broke, no access to another one, characters deleted. Had been playing for about 9 months and was new to discovery the first time round
I have to say knowing the mod the second time round made it easier and quicker to get back on my feet
I started by looting some codies and selling them. Made me 50m mil and then bought a Pitate Transport and robbed and looted transports to earn somemore. From there created a second character, a miner and shipped Silver Ore.
Now I am not far off where I was originally, and much quicker this time around.
Have to say at first the prospect of starting over was daunting and I put it off for about 4 weeks after getting my new computer. But I am so glad I did as I have found it enjoyable and satisfying and also creating new characters, hanging around in areas I hadnt previously has made it much more fun
Now could I do it again if something bad happened!!!! Hopefully I wont ever have to find out
I did 50k kill base missions in rheinland in a starflier before buying a... humpback I think? Traded around the place until 2m, bought a VHF Titan. Did 300-400k missions for the Corsairs until I had 20m, then bought one of those transports (gahh, always forget the name) and traded my way up.

my way.
Almost the same way I did it actually, I just traded beforehand and got a Train, then my first character to make after that was a pirate.

Pirate in it. Then get sanctioned and banned.
Rinse repeat.
I know that's meant as a joke, but does that really work?

Yeah, that's the roleplay way, but you just danced around the money way, its quite unattractive in a community actually, in a game. Grinding and grinding and grinding for... what? So you can roleplay on another character. That notion is very flawed and its sad it hasnt changed. Trader/Pirate interactions are one thing to blame along with the exoribant prices of many ships, ect. People do not like to roleplay on traders because...
