Yes there's been threads like this and yes there've been failed attempts to get the source code already.

Don't let any wanker tell you that it's unnecessary, we don't need it etc.
You do what you want to do and if that means this, then good luck.

Even if Discovery doesn't want the source code, the modding community at large of course does.

It's a very long shot but you don't lose points for trying.

like yourself are still playing the game that we created a decade ago. To
your question below: yes, others have approached me in the past and I have
gone through some efforts to get the source code released, but Microsoft
policies made that a difficult proposition. I will, based on your mail,
try again. Please be patient with me since I'm currently in the middle of
Kinect launch, but be assured that I will look into this.

...but I also found that MicroSoft actually has the game (and source code as well!) to download for FREE on their web site!

The Mechcommander 2 source code was not exactly GPL'd, but the Shared Source license does allow certain freedoms when it comes to non-commercial use and redistribution of the software and derivative works. A similar release of the Freelancer source code would be the best case scenario. Here's to hoping!

Also, why does everyone spam these threads like flood? And why is it always the same people? I wish I had mod-powers...
