I'm hoping to find a server with a medieval or possibly fantasy focus (Lord of the Rings style). Anyone located a decent roleplay server using the Alpha release yet?
Anyone decided what their favorite use of the rarer metals is when you gain your first few ingots of iron, gold, or diamond gems? Armor, weapons, hardier tools? I haven't decided and am just hoarding for now.
The map does not extend downwards into the ground infinitely. Eventually, soon after you reach the unbreakable bed rock, you'll burst through into a void of sky underneath. I've read that you die if you take a leap, but haven't tried it myself.
The second and third time I ever died I had forgotten how to get back to my base from the spawn point. I can't recall what led me so far from the spawn point to that first base to begin with... Fortunately, Minepedia led me to an answer : a map generation tool. http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
For some reason I can't find the right wiki page now, but the tool will generate an image of the map you've explored, and in several formats. That's very useful if you manage to get lost while exploring: just create something that is visible from "space" at your current location, like a recognizable pattern of flowers (red shows up great), save and quit, then generate the map and you should be able to tell from recognizable terrain features how to get back to where you got lost from. I'll post a link to the tool when I get home from work tonight. You can even map your underground tunnel system, although it's mainly a horizontal map, so vertical structures or shafts are more obscure than horizontal ones.

Now SMP got a fixed server side forge/inventory/saved locations, was considering bringing out a server for this. Going for Fantasy style (using the RPG texture pack would be ideal for everyone on), have people trading resources and such around.
So I was bored...and yesterday after countless of hours of wandering trying to find my room I made to take a screen shot, I finally found it, and then today I made...or tried to, an AT-AT.
Hi!
I stumbled upon this thread when I peeked on the forums one day and immediately fell in love. Minecraft is just so great. I bought it almost immediately and it was totally worth it.
If someone wants to try it, the developer declared a "free-to-play weekend" because of server troubles, so you should be able to download it and play it for a while. If you haven't paid for it, you won't get any updates once this is fixed, though. Remember it's still in Alpha, so the game is still in development.
TL;DR You can get it for free on the official site for a while.
I stumbled upon this game by accident and then wondered if anyone of you had experience in it. And then I searched and found this thread with people raving about it
This certainly shows to me that a brilliant gameplay idea beats the decoration any day. I'm definitely going to get the game. Based on people's reaction and what I've seen of it it will be money truly well spent what comes to gaming.
This guys voice and presentation are top notch. Funny, pleasant voice, informative and instructional, 44 year old gamer. Way above the normal assholish 'tube videos of teenage bragging of how cool they are.
