hey as somepeople may have seen me complain about before, somthing has happened since friday that has litterally destroyed my internet speed.
it wasnt very fast before, but now...
i ran a speed test from a website www.broadbandchoices.co.uk, and my ping was 350ms, which doesnt really help me, sincei dont know where the source is, but if its from america thats 150ms bigger than it should be, and if its from the UK or Europe then its 250ms bigger than it should be.
then it moved on to the download test, my download speed was 0.1mbs now.... even i know there is something up with that... and my Upload speed didnt even register. 0.0mbs.
im gonna be on the horn to BT in the morning to wring some necks, just wondering if you all have anything to suggest, these tests were done without any background download apps running, no torrents or anything of that nature, just Skype for me and MSN for mum, my 2 younger brothers arent even here and its going slow as hell.
Would you happen to come across a FUP breach? Some ISPs, despite claiming to provide "unlimited data transfer" actually limit you by setting a Fair User Policy (e.g. my ex ISP had the FUP "the sum of 10GB in 2 consecutive days", and they limited my speed DRASTICALLY when I crossed the line)
But then again, it could be just your ISP screwing with something. I'd check with them and bring a hammer, just in case
Most ISP's these days say 'unlimited broadband', but what happens is that you have a limited amount of download quota.
When you hit that limit, they 'shape' your download speed down to 64k or something silly like that, until the next month.
As an example, say you have a download quota of 10gb for a month, but you go over that quota.
Your ISP will say "Ok, this account has gone over their quota" press a few buttons and your 'net speed gets reduced, until next month when your quota is reset.
Do as Nauticus said, check with your ISP, this may be the case or there may be other things your ISP is doing that is messing with your connection.
Another thing you might want to check is, if you have a wireless router, is if disabling the antenna fixes the issue. There are ways to break most older encryption methods... some people use that to piggyback on other connections, basically stealing bandwith. If this happened to you, change your password, if it happens repeatedly get a more modern router.

dammn... does playing freelancer or other online games use up this limit?
ive not downloaded nearly that amount... its only the 7th of this month, i cant speak for other members of the family, though based on their online habits this wouldnt equate to much either.. :<
how do you disable the antenna on the router? o_o ad our router is like... 4/5 years old now, you think sombody could be nicking my BW ?:(

Yes, all online games use a bit of the download limit, even though it's normally a small amount.
You could probably play Freelancer all month and not make a real dent in your download limit so don't worry about it too much.

Not possible with FL only.

2 Options if its a visible antenna just unplug it. If it is build in the router then you need to stop the radio option from the router firmware.
It will help a lot if you tell me exact router model, and there is a option that the ISP have some issues at the moment, read careful your contract first and call them.
The older encryption methods- WEP and WPA are really easy to hack. Use WPA2 PSK, it is doable too but it is a bit harder. Use password with at least 10 characters including capital letters and special symbols- it takes more time to hack and better PC is needed too. The 4-way handshake is practical unstoppable with the custom routers sold on the market,so if the hacker is good you cannot protect your network and you need to use cables or buy router that supports special kinds of firmware like Tomato for example.

Another thing that I am going to suggest, even though it's fairly unlikely. The quality of the cable in which your house is using.
With DSL, there was one point in time where my connection suddenly went to a quarter of it's speed, and I tested the cable from the DMark to the jack I was using and found that the cable had been damaged somewhere in between by something, and I simply just ran a new CAT5 cable between the Dmark and the jack and my connection suddenly got faster again.
Copper corrodes, gets old and wears out when in bad conditions. Just something to possibly check.
