I found the Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon to be a very good read.
First book in the set is Trading In Danger, I believe.
Characters Alan Markson: The Hellfire Legion's Lord Commander The Perihelion: Freeport Four's guardian, and yet much more. Missing and assumed Lost with all hands. Eric Dresmund: Junker, smuggler, thief. Last seen drunk on Beaumont Vayrn Wyard: IMG Recon pilot turned Neo-Terran Captain. Last location unknown
Quite surpised no one said Frank Herbert's Dune, or the Prelude to Dune books written by his son. I've read House Atreides, Harkonnen, The Bulterian Jihad, and The Machine Crusade. Currently starting to read The Battle of Corrin. I'd have to say that these books seem to be focuses heavily on individual characters as well as politics. Just a list of books below if you're interested, and yes it's Science Fiction.
Dune Chronicles
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Prelude to Dune
Dune: House Atreides
Dune: House Harkonnen
Dune: House Corrino
Legends of Dune
Dune: The Butlerian Jihad
Dune: The Machine Crusade
Dune: The Battle of Corrin
Heroes of Dune
Sandworms of Dune
Paul of Dune
The Winds of Dune
The Throne of Dune

Peter F. Hamilton (The Night's Dawn Trilogy / Commonwealth Saga)
Kim Stanley Robinson (Mars Trilogy)
Richard Morgan (Takeshi Kovacs novels, not for young minds)
Karen Travis (Wess'har series)
Timothy Zahn (Conqueror's Trilogy)
I will soon start the Void Trilogy from Hamilton. Once I get my rear end off my chair
Peter F. Hamilton is a brilliant British Sci-Fi author. Look him up on Wikipedia. I've only read one of his massive trilogies, which was the Night's Dawn trilogy, but it was truly a spectacular and thrilling read. The three books of the trilogy are the Reality Dysfunction, the Neutronium Alchemist and the Naked God.
Another Sci-Fi author who's book I'm currently reading is William Gibson. Again, look him up on Wikipedia. His book that I'm reading is Neuromancer.

Yay, another Hamilton fan. For some reason my dad gave me the third book of the Void Trilogy when I haven't read the other two. I don't have time for another Hamilton trilogy at the moment, they're so long.
[17:45:39] Wolfs Ghost (Murphy): Tom, you have problems. Go kill yourself.
[19:25:12] Johnny (Jam): Tomtom, I will beat you with a spoon.
[14:22:56] Prarabdh Thakur: KILL HIM WITH A SHEEP.
[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.
[11:32:18] Warspite: Thank you for being so awesome Tom. <3
[18:17:36] Metano: I love you tomtom
[20:06:24] Warspite: I will seriously give you epic head.

Metro 2033 is fun
Anything Arthur C. Clarke will suit you
Dune stuff and side books are like 20 books, they are also good. Original 6 books are A.W.E.S.O.M.E.
I didn't read sci fi for a while now, have to check my shelves for additional titles.
