Hm, why? Mercenary is for hire. He shoots those who he gets paid for. He can only accept pirate contracts, ye, but he doesn't have to because star wars said so.
Speaking of which, i've thinking about setting a merc for a long time now. Lone merc, that'd be pure fun if not one thing - forum-based bounty board. I can't just look at the ship and "scan" it for bounties, unless, of course, i use some script for that but making one would take so much time that i instantly give up.
Quote:Because they rarely are true mercenaries here. Mostly, they're some kind of alternative to Freelancer ID. Merc is supposed to be a bad guy for hire. Not the one who hunts pirates, but one who works for them. He should be unshaved cool guy with deep voice and cigar in his mouth (oh, and don't forget minigun).
I think you didn't met me in space...
Quote:I remember, when I was on my Bounty Hunter I were killed by Merc. I liked it. Because -that- Mercenary know how to do his job. He knows in which side of law he is supposed to be.
Now i'm quite unsure. My char sees Bounty boys as business competitors. Killed alot of them so can't
remember names. Maybe one of them was you?;)
EDIT:

"True mercs" are working for the highest bidder IMHO. Not for one of the big three (lawful, semi, unlawful).
It's the merc's decision to choose um... favorite customers. :D

Or to ones who always pays on time and gives stable source of income. Maybe gives a few pies, pitchforks and guns too. If constantly jump from one to the another, soon your reputation would change to unrealiable or very untrustyworth. At this case you would barely get any clients. But of course, in disco people memory is short so it's np.
I seem to remember a vanilla info card stating that Kruger hired a couple of Mercs to do some damage to the IMG's operations. On the same token, he admitted the ships that shot their base recently looked familiar. I might have the factions wrong though.
This is vanilla rumors that support the fact mercs can be hired by both sides and are only tools. The problem in Disco is, people put ooRP angst and miss placed inRP angst towards mercs. If you want the merc to stop shooting you, offer him a better deal. Really simple.
That said; I hate mercs. They should all rot in hell for killing my Xeno.
Best and most profitable encounter i've had was in the Taus. Some trader got pirated, i just passing by and
suddenly the trader /givecashed me 2mil and asked for my help. The pirate then /givecashes me 3mil and asks my
help too. The trader then /givecashed me again with 10mil and said something like "I give you more when you leave!"
When i was about 10K away from them i got another cred upload of 5 mil.
And the morale of the story is: Even mercs are lucky at some days... 20mil for just being here
