I couldn't agree more with this. Also, 30 hours is enough, if someone is barely doing it you can notice how they get warning and they tend to fly more. Why ? People need change then they come back.
For example : Mollies died.
I hate people who are idling on their ships to preserve officiality so they could maintain some sort of nerdish power they feel behind their PC-s, but its not a job, its a game and a fun one when you don't think so much about it.
Trust me, being unofficial is so much more fun, less time consuming and it spares you dealing with alot of things you wouldn't bother with if you didn't have responsibility over npc faction.

I was just thinking of this.. A while ago i heard people talking about how one person was actually flying 30k above the plane, and leaving his ship there.

I will concede that point to you and Zelot; there aren't people clamoring for those positions, and it's a shame because there's a lot of potential for great RP and fun to come out of the factions you two mentioned. The thing is, that's not an issue I would place on the Official Faction system, and more on the capricious nature of players; some people don't want to play it, for whatever reason. Another possibility for that would be that there is a lot of space to fill in the void that is the Discovery universe, and the person who chose Bowex or another house shipping corp, might have chosen RepEx.
However, I do see your point on how it's hard to keep factions like the Bundies and RepEx, etc., active; perhaps for instances like these, where there simply isn't a supply of players willing to support the faction, rules for officialdom could be relaxed a bit? I understand -and I think I may have addressed- that it's hard to draw attention and support for the more esoteric and some less combat-oriented factions, and I think that in situations like that, there's no easy way for the rules to support the official factions that exist. Perhaps, as said above, relaxing them?
I think that you can agree though, that putting in place systems for unofficial factions to integrate into official ones and maintain their stylistic flair, so to speak, would be good for maintaining overall official faction activity? Not necessarily taking over, not necessarily killing off, but moulding onto and around the official in such a way that both benefit.

i agree with the 300 hours thing, but leave this event thing out of it, kinda hard to do.
with 300 hours (or maybe more) the official factions existing really would be active, but the best part is that one and the same person couldn't be in like 4-5 factions the same time anymore.
but as all the meta gamers would Q_Q about this till the forums explode, i dun think this will even be considered. too bad really.
Some of us have jobs and lives, dude. People are having trouble managing 30 hours because there's simply nothing to do. You can't expect us to go through the same routine without really gaining much. That's the thing about a volunteer program.

I know, right? Darn greedy independents. They already have their lolcaps and powertraders, what more do they want?
On a serious note:
300 hours is pure insanity. It would eliminate all but the top eight factions (according to the current activity chart).
30 hours is a bit more reasonable. But....

Both quoted for truth.
Remind me why you want to strip away the benefits given to a group of players since they've gone to the effort to organise themselves, act responsibly, and contribute positively to the server?
