To make it clear - I aim at making crafts, which could fit as many players as possible, that is why I summon you to place here your input, ideas, sketches, pictures, discussions (so you could settle down multiple ideas into one concept), etc.
In other words - you will be able to request, organize, put own effort at designing, and I will be your tool, to implement these ideas.
What you have to do:
First - name the ship you are speaking about "@Firefly ... ", then you are free to put any ideas design-wise, either whole design or small details, or painting, etc.
Be sure to place input on posted before ideas as well.
I want to solve three problems with this thread: Lack of own ideas, lack of YOUR time and skills, in modelmaking, and overall satisfaction.
Let's brainstorm, let's put our effort, real effort into Discovery mod, be a part of the process, let your ideas through my hands.
Be productive, the more interconnected ideas - the better.
Could be a bit hard. Reason: There's two Ships (Annapurna and the Nanga Parbat) which are similar to the Firefly. So best would be either leave it like it is, or change it so it doesn't look like the Firefly from the Series, but still similar to the other two Ships.
The Nanga Parbat has Storage Containers on it. So might wanna do something like that. Make it visible that it can haul some Cargo.
I know it's an Import but leave it. Just leave it. Because if you're going to change it you'll have to change the Arrow too. (That's also an Import from Star Wars).
"Who is it doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?"
@Firefly: Why not aiming for an IMG Ship? We already have this and this. Why not have a similar Transport. There wont be another debate whether the Ship doesn't fit into the Line or Sirius. It doesn't need many Adjustments either.

For the Arrow, I've seen an interesting model that Jinx submitted to be a Sea Serpent but was rejected. That model actually looks more like an Arrow and may be re-purposed if he still has the files.
Oh and the Annapurna and Nanga Parbats are not modeled after kettles, I swear, they are modelled after ducks. Thus the nickname "Annapurna BattleDuck/BattleGoose"
Jinx been working on couple of concepts for the Arrow, so I will ask him about the progress.
Anyhow, if we'd started from Firefly - lets have some more talks on it. Also I would like to point, that we can make any model not neccessary based on the IMG line (but if community will say so - why not).
We can actually go ANY design, because the Serenity's Firefly is not the thing we must aim at. From one point of view - this ship does not exist as an original one.
Also @Firefly and @Kujira - what if we tie those two ships into a shipline?
Again, without aiming at designs of SW or Serenity ships.
I'd imagine a ship built and maintained by freelancers would be a more rugged, mass produced type of ship. It'd built to be cheap but tough so very few curves or corners with compartments that can be sealed off, so a few indents along the hull to make it look like the ship slots together like lego. The cargo bay would be rectangular without the sharp corners, either rounded or at a 45 degree angle so it doesn't look like a box.
The overall shape I'd imagine to be a delta wing with the cargo bay sticking out equally at the top and bottom (think a box with a line through the middle) the top section of the cargo bay would merge down into the neck of the cockpit while the bottom and sides would be angled to merge with the rest of the hull except for the back which would remain flat for the cargo bay door, maybe a door on the bottom too (like the salvager.)
The engines could follow the same style as the cargo bay with two large engines proud of the wing but merging into it, or have four, two on the top and two on the bottom of the wing or a combindation.
As for the cockpit, have it about a third of the cargo bays size extended forward beyond the tip of the wing on a neck, much like a fighter yet.
Texture and colour-wise I'm thinking grey metal with sections of dark green paint (wing tips, a few boxes or stripes on the hull) and a few burns and marks to make it look like it's been around the galaxy a few times.
Also, lets change the name of the thing while we're at it and finally put a stop to all the foaming mouth Firefly fanatics trying to save the model. I'm thinking something from the Roman Pantheon of gods, perhaps the Vesta or Maia.
@Kujira
Given how the GMG ships look, lots of smooth edges, rounded hulls and wings (with the exception of that dog ugly transport, the kamome) I'd continue the theme used on the freighter. I'm thinking a long, flowing ship with gas canisters on the sides, something that wouldn't look out of place on the ocean. I'd imagine they'd want to leave as little wake as possible while moving through gas clouds so perhaps a larger nose/prow?
I'm all for moving this to a freelancer design following the same ideas for the Firefly but instead of a delta wing I'm thinking something more unusual like this. Scale it up slightly, angle off the smooth edges, slap a twin engine in the back and I think we'll have something quite interesting. As for name I'm thinking Plutus.
