Let, i've had an Osiris once. The Tauri. It used to be Corsair, turned Dragon, Outcast, then Order. Hell, it even became a "nomad hybrid" at one point. Yeah, ofcourse there we're folks saying "OORP NUB, I R REPORTING JOO!". But i take it the admins knew about the story i wrote, thus didn't sanction. (Or reports never came in).
Make the story known. Make the ship and the character(s) known. And should some one complain ingame, point him/her/it to that story.
"War. War never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage."
i guess you talk to the people concerned - i don t mean admins... i mean the factions that are affected by your RP - ask for feedback and suggestions. - make your RP transparent, - secrets are for player-chars, but not for players.
furthermore - well, i guess you need luck, too. - if someone wants to report you, he can. - if the rules were taken to the letter - epyon would get banned and the fantasia would be placed in bretonia with a fixed reputation. ( like it has been done to others )
but thats now how roleplay is supported. - very much of it is subjective - and very much of it also comes down to "who you are". - that doesn t mean the allmighty "inner circle" - but i am sure that a veteran player has a lot more freedom than a newbie.
during my time, i had equipped my ships with the most funny weapons - ( battleship ) - ranging from full nomad turrets to full corsairs, full liberty - bretonian etc. - no one ever complained or reported it. - doesn t mean that i have much more freedom of choice, but i think that a no-name BHG in a battleship that would equip his whole ship with nomad turrets would raise some suspicioun and maybe some trial.
so, ... the "who you are" and how you can argue for your own case in an ooc way is an important part of what you can do. - same with self confidence....you need it to argue for what you do... even against the rules.
for me - the rules are a guideline, some are necessary to really take to the letter, others are more or less "just an assistance". - for example, i consider the IFF of a ship to be utterly unimportant. - and i don t care what ship someone is flying - but i do expect it to be reflected in the persons roleplay.
others however do not allow factions to fly other factions ships and put a great importance on others IFF and equipment. - thats the people you need to justify yourself to. - while my kind is the ones that you ll need to show WHY you chose to fly a certain piece of equipment.
in order to play a char that takes all the freedom, you gotto deal with both kinds of people. - you must soothe the ones that argue with the rules and you gotto justify yourself to those that look closely on your reasons for your freedom. - only when they agree with you, you are really free to go.
with that in mind, ... yes, its possible to fly an outcast dreadnaught with corsair IFF and a BHG ID. - if you can explain the why and how.
but we know - there are a lot of people ( 70% regarding to the BHG in liberty BC thread ) that said "no exceptions" - those are the people that would report the fantasia and try to sanction the player for ooRPness.
edit: in contrast to what exile wrote, i take up a different pov. - i don t care much what the admins say about RP. - they are just one voice and not at all representative or more than any player. - its important how the players i meet take my RP in. i want to convince the common pilot that passes by as much as the hardcore player that read all the stories. - what the admins think is rather secondary for the matter of roleplay.
Second what Jinx says, the awesome thing about well done RP is that if it has backing of admins or a fair few players, it can technically be a little out there and still legit.
I have a xeno in a liberty gunboat.. he does have a terrorist ID, however, the ship class is still unorthodox... what got me through was the nod of the admins but mostly the full backing of the XA players, many of whom have/are contributing to the RP behind the character and ship.
Do some work behind the scenes, you will be surprised how surprised at how supportive people can be if its done well.
It would depend on how 'out there' it is, I guess. For example, I know of Outcasts that use looted Buckshots instead of Krakens for RP reasons. This is believable, since Buckshots aren't as good as Krakens.
If, however, you are a Corsair and get a Scimitar, for instance, because the Decurion is rubbish... that would be seen as an exploit.
The way I would do it is to actually use worse equipment then I can for RP reasons.
For example, a Hogosha in a Waran bomber with RP story would never be flamed. Because Waran sucks.
But an Outcast in Red Catamaran would be flamed, I guarantee you that.
Try using weaker equipment for a start.
If you are doing it for the RP story, then do that.
If you want to pwn everyone and get attention.. Then don't do it at all:)
I'v seen a good example with Zapp I think.
I believe he had a Templar on his Carina, instead of a Sabre.
Everyone knows that Templar is an average VHF, while Sabre is one of the best.
So, you get the point.

It is every Corsair's responsibility to die a beautiful death in defense of Crete, regardless of how OORP or how capwhoring the opposition is. Launch your fighter, joust the battlecruisers and die a beautiful death. Then, drink it down in the bar.
If you had the RP behind it, why not? IMO. Just make your intentions well known, get player backing, even an odd admin couldn't hurt either.
Then do it. If someone reports you, so be it, you have the story and the backing to protect you from a report.
Kinda similar to me wanting to use an Osiris for my Liberty navy char. The Osiris being a liberty ship and all, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle and a dready would do just fine.
