And, uh, the reasoning is perfectly logical. In-roleplay, it's very, very unlikely that someone would make Gallic engines work on a Titan, for example. Or that Rheinland engines would work fine with a Liberty Guardian.
You want to roleplay out converting an Eagle to Oil-based Gallic engines so you can use one? Do it, and get an SRP. I'm guessing this kind of SRP would be relatively easy to get, as long as the background is solid.
This makes zero sense because if it'll be done the way you're describing it then it's a clear waste of effort - 99.(9) people on server won't bother to choose between native engine or CTE engine.

spending all that time creating a system for interchangeable engines, only to let discos biggest cockblocking program nerf anyone that does.
+1
The whole idea of the engines is stupid- investing time in them because the devs have fun in doing it is ok when the server is full and lagless, the in-game economy works properly, the guns are balanced, transports and gbs are not OP,pobs and pobs created items are useful and balanced and caps have some actual usage.
In the current tragic half done state of the mod adding one more possible buggy cosmetic feature is idiotic at least.
I personally wont change any engines on any of my ships since it is useless cosmetic effect.
Also this is not new thing, look at the 4.87 cap gun effects for example or at the faction based snacs.
Tons of wasted time for useless things, the prime example are the zapper and ray guns- useless things that were not even tested before throwing away useful things like razors.

Customizable engines are cool. How they'll be technerfed nobody (besides aerelm / whoever else in the dev team) knows. I'm hoping it's the ship-based one only as that'll generally leave plenty of choice.
Remember that disco's a roleplaying server where certain IDs use tech that makes sense for them. That includes engines. Rheinland engined Guardians don't make sense. Period.
Also, SRPs. Come up with a decent background if you really want that fancy ship&engine combination.
