I've been wanting to post this thread for a while now, but I figured out it wasn't my place to suggest something like this, given my history on our server. But I would like if we could just set that particular topic aside for a moment.

How many times have you seen someone, low ranked or not, breaking the server rules? And how many times have you reported them? Even more so, how many times have you tried to PM the guy and help them?

I see it all the time. On my lawfuls, on my unlawfuls and on my freelancers. People doing stupid things. Just yesterday on my Rogue (Before getting my face pounded in by Hastings on his Libby *fistshake*) I met three people over the course of twenty minutes. Some rank 38 camara tried to shoot me without a word. Was going to tell him something, but a Ptrain rolled up, carrying Helium 3, so I ignored that camara. Too bad, since the Ptrain F1ned. No biggy, suddenly a rank 75 BW Trans with human organs comes along, calls me a N, jumps to NY.

Since that sort of rage does not happen too often, I decided to report his ass, but when wondering if I should have submit a report on that camara, I was all...cba. He was a newbie anyway.

Was that a good thing to do? Because in a few weeks that guy would probably get a cruiser or larger, depending on how much he trades or mines.

But seriously, we can talk all about how the server's level of gameplay is slowly decreasing because of the influx of new players. The problem, obviously, are not the players themselves, but rather the fact that they are not educated. Forum visits are not mandatory, nor they should be imho, but if you have tried talking to those people you'd probably know that "If you are not an admin you have no reason to tell me what I'm doing is wrong.". Heck, it was something I used to think when I first joined disco and had people PM me about things like that.

Question is, should we start focusing on these people? Just actively cleaning up the server so to speak. Some time ago, Jax joined up with a pirate group, invisible on his admin ship, and ended up bastilling 7 people over the course of two hours. It is that bad.

End question is pretty much obvious. Should we focus on sanctionlancing for a month or so, just to weed out the server. Will be a rather horrible month for anyone processing sanction reports, but perhaps it might be worth it, if we want to keep the ingame more or less sane.

EDIT:

Something that a friend of mine brought up is that they have a feeling that the reporting system is way too ''feedbackless''. If you submit a report it and it does not get processed, there's a smaller chance you will submit one again. Not to mention having to talk with the player already is a risky buisiness, because people could misinterpret you trying to help them and end up being sanctioned for posing as an admin.

I try helping some players, but I just get a reply of "U RUS? )))".
I'm not even kidding, there's loads of newbies who hardly understand any English.
Perhaps, we should translate the rules commodity to other languages for people? That might at least get them to think about using google translate or something...

In the long run, it's better to report early. Better safe than sorry.

There was a sig here, once.

I think we should make a server police who camp bases like Newark or Waterloo and who should call themselves something like Judge or Judges and let them say things like: "I am the law" and so on.

That way, they can kick/ban people, even if the ban only max for 1 hour and they can report the case to the A.D.M.I.N.S.

I think it's about time disco had a crackdown on cybering.

I think flushing out the server is the best thing to do. Mainly due to the "newbs" that are beginning to come and play and don't really understand the term RP. Once we have the "newbs" gone for a day or so maybe having as Tyler said players that monitor the game. Another option is to enable Angels the ban command but for a limited time say 2 hours. Or my final brainwave of an awful idea is to somehow make players have a Forum account to gain access to say Gunboats and larger. This way we don't have people from other servers coming here powertrading and rolling around in Corsair Dreadnoughts (Hence my sarcastic RP guide).

I think the goal should be to educate non-elitists newer players into becoming better roleplayers instead of seeking to merely punish them.

I don't know how to go about that, though.

At least then people of languages will have a clue.

tl\dr,

I, myself, didn't submitted many reports. Maybe one or two for whole time. I just didn't met any serious rule breaks I can't live with.

My policy is, if I see someone doing something wrong I just tell them what they are doing is against the rules but I do so politely e.g. "Excuse me, I don't mean to bother you but (insert whatever rule they are breaking) is against the server rules, you might want to (insert correct way of doing)." If they feel the need to sanction me then I'd hope the admins would see that my intentions were good and not punish me for it.

On the otherhand if folks are being arrogant, stubborn or just a pain in the backside then a report is needed. That in itself is a pain because you need to gather evidence, screenshots or chat logs and I'll admit more often than not I don't want the hassle.
It's a catch 22 situation, if we don't report then it continues but if we do it drains the enjoyment of the game.

I suppose of a form of whitelisting would deter some of the rule breakers, it'd be a slight inconvience but as long as you could link several ID's to a forum account I imagine it wouldn't be so bad.
