I started playing FLDisco during 4.83. Soon after 4.84 came out. I think the attraction for a lot of folks back then was - “wow - I can haz big ship.” or I can fly this ship from Star Wars or Firefly or Homeworld. The Colonials carved a space into the server by playing out there BSG fantasies.
I wasn’t much of a role player. I did like exploring all the added systems so I gravitated towards being a miner. This was back when mining was not profitable, but it gave me an excuse to explore.
The server back then could only handle 128 players and was full often. It was very busy during US prime time. I think this had something to do with $10 copies of the game being available. Every so often, Microsoft would release $10 copies of the game, sold at the big box stores like Walmart and Target. I bought several backup copies.
I had my son and all his friends playing.
About the time 4.85 came out, I was doing other things and I missed most of the big Dublin gold rush.
The $10 copies of the game disappeared sometime around here. Microsoft shut down their server and the game was had to run on a Vista machine. I think this killed the influx of new players.
The game performs great under Win 7 and 8.
I came back for 4.86 and now I’m back for 4.87. I have noticed a lot of players in the UK and Europe. My faction is very active during prime hours over there. When I log on in the evenings, I am often the only player in my faction. It’s ok - I sort of feel like I’m the ‘night shift’. I take supplies to the player bases and putter around - but I’m usually alone.
I am interested in seeing more US players. Not sure how to make that happen. Until then, I’ll keep flying the night shift.
Quote:What are those bullcrap servers with "NO RP SERVER" or "Sirius Discovery Server" "Eased RP Server", ffs just join the GC server.
There are people out there, who just want to enjoy the game without reading 15 pages of rules, you know.
Uhm no, but the purpose of Discovery is to read those 15 pages of rules 8|
