Some people have said it's for RP.
Some people have said it stops capwhoring in NY.
Some people have said it allows official factions to keep track of capital ships if a home system is under attack and they need to call on re-inforcements.

neutrally said.... it helps everyone if applied neutrally and without any bias or any other intention than to make things transparent and organized.
transparency is not a bad thing for that matter.... it is certainly interesting to know how many battleships are around. - for example, i d be most interested how many zoner juggernauts are existing and how many of them are tied to guarding a specific freeport, how many are just messing around and how many are regularly around anyway.
that is not meant to control the players, nor to patronize them in anyway - its to satisfy a curiosity. - of course, such a demand can easily be exploited. its only a little step from "wishing to know more and asking for transparency" up to "wishing to control and to project the own opinion about how they "ought" to be used" upon that matter.
the pure registration is not the bad act. - its what you do with what you get. - it like registring in real life. if the goverment takes personal date off the people, its not a bad thing per se. - but only when they start to categorize you, to label you with the data and to apply consequences, it start to restrict someones freedom.... so its the very same in this game.
registration is a good thing. - misusing what you get is a bad thing to do. - knowledge alone is not troublesome - but using the knowledge to increase a grip around others to dominate them is.

1. What coordination? Indies are mostly independent for a reason
2. Improves the quality of Roleplay? If only!
3. No more rank conflicts, I partially agree, except for the fact that you have to work for your rank in a faction. And most indies are self-pronounced Commanders

First and most important is to get them to join the forums, and maybe get them to read the rules. Since you were in Alpha today Nooblet you saw the numbers, 3 destroyers in there, 2 of which have no idea we have forums. Let alone the server rules.
Second is to keep track of produced ships, we are the military, so we should know what there is, who built it, who is commanding it, and where is it stationed.
No powerplay, ego or flexing. Powerplay is when an player in a destroyer comes to Alpha and claim he owns it. No one owns Alpha, so that is another thing we aim to stop.
Edit: You are right Jinx, edited. It was just a wrong word usage not a indie flame post.
" Powerplay is when an indie in a destroyer comes to Alpha and claim he owns it."
hate to steer it there - but you might like to switch your terms to "player" instead of "indie" - cause the term powerplay has nothing to do with being in a playerfaction or not. - such a statement just fuels the rift between those two groups that are not even existant in game, but only defined here on the forum.
My opinion on powerplay, is using all tools (available to your character or not) to be "better" then your opponent.
In this scenario, some regulators of cap-ships have been actively destroying ships "not registered" just because they want to enforce "their" form of roleplay upon others..
Thats what I meant in this place, just finding another reason to take someone down and feed your PVP needs

So...ehm...how, exactly, are we supposed to enforce registration policies, if not by destroying noncompliant vessels? Are we going to fine them? Make them sit in a corner?
