As an idea for an event it occurred to me, what if in-game 'ion storms' cause all jumpgates and/or trade lanes to stop working for a day...few days...week?
What would Sirius do if it were forced back into the stone age of space travel?
Basically it would be a short time devoted to slow trading and patrolling. For a short while, governments may declare emergencies, aid and relief groups might be needed for supplies shortages and various other crisis that might follow a transportation breakdown.
Would it be a piracy buff? Yes. Would it be a convoy buff? Double yes.
Doesn't seem like it would be hard to implement. A week would probably result in hair pulling, but a day long period would be pretty cool for narrowing trading to jumpholes, and forcing many to spice up their routes.
Has anyone ever plotted a long trade voyage without including any gates or lanes before? Sirius looks totally different when you only see it by the jumphole connections! I think it would be interesting to temporarily shift the main arteries of traffic from where they are to what is now the back water smuggling routes, and see how they mix!
Jump holes are deadly! Agiera sez so! So no civilian traffic through jump holes...oh...the entire Sirius economy collapsed overnight...
OTOH, if Agiera says "ok, use jump holes, they're not as bad as we claimed...and we need food..." who's going to start using gates again afterwards? Agiera/DSE loose their main source of revenue (IRP)
nah. it only seems like a good idea in your head without taking into account how it would affect others overall
::edit: to be more specific: why should the entire server suffer a headache for any amount of time for an event they didn't choose to participate in?::
I think this would ether kill the game because people won't be able to have the RP/Fights they want as they have ships in other systems. It would get boring quickly. If you don't have a ship in New York, then you're stuffed.

inRP:
You can't build Jumphole where it is convenient and expect it to be there for eternity. You can build Jumpgate wherever you want.
