So, my father in law got a telescope, and he's an amateur enthusiast of astronomy, but he's asked me if I can investigate if a software or an online website exists that helps to know when and how we can enjoy an astronomy outdoors telescope thingie session.

Yes, Stellarium is good, but I prefer Cartes du Ciel / Sky Charts, it is far more detailed than Stellarium, means there are stars down to 12th magnitude. But for outdoor astronomy, I should recomment some sky atlas, a book. Preferably "Pocket Sky Atlas" or simmiliar.
