Freelancer is good for trading and mercenary work (If flying a fighting ship, ie: escorting)But you will not want to mine with one.
Miner ID is better for mining and can also trade.
(Freelancer id does not get a mining bonus and would take you forever to get a load of anything)
If you are a new player, joining an active player faction will help you greatly to get to know Disco as a community.
Which is sort of the point of a multiplayer game.

PSA: If you have been having stutter/FPS lag on Disco where it does not run as smoothly as other games, please look at the fix here: https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...pid2306502

You man make money all sorts of ways, but if you are leaning towards mining, there are several mining factions and they all have particular 'zones' they mine valuable ores in. Even as an ID carrying member of a mining faction, you're still considered more of an 'independent affiliate' so you can work as an IMG or BMM and still mine on your own or work with others. You will also notice many of these factions have 'tagged' players that mean they are part of the actual 'player' faction for that ID. You'll find if you go where you find them, you can likely get involved and learn some pointers on getting a good transport for more profitable runs.
