I'd try the above first.. then (and I caution care here unless you really know what you're doing),
Try turning off unnecessary services and programmes:-
Command: Start/Run: Services.msc for Services
Command: Start/Run: msconfig.exe for Programmes.
Do this a bit at a time....This can eliminate start up conflicts if you get down to the basic programmes you need. But beware...make sure you know enough not to switch off essential start up Programmes and Services.
If you're not confident about this then don't do it!
Perfect idea for ya 13 cent, if you want those bugs out of your computer, simply take it outside, and place some c4 on it, click the detonater and WALAH, all your bugs are gone. I call it, Kaboom antivirus.
After being drenched in the world of Windows Networking all day today, I have found an answer that brought me joy and happiness.
WKSSVC.DLL a file used to control NetBT, Printer & File sharing and a few other things, was corrupt and/or missing as whenever I tried to run it from the Command Prompt window, it wouldn't activate the service and NetBT refused to refresh when I tried a network connection repair.
Something WinsockXP Fix would usually fix. But ESET Smart Security had some kind of magical driver that screwed everything up anyway.
The Fix:
1. Found my Windows XP Pro Disk
2. Brought up the command prompt window.
3 Typed regsvr32 wkssvc.dll
At this point if the service starts, go into My Network Places and see if your networked computers show, if not...Continue.
4. Type sfc /scannow in the command prompt window and insert your Windows XP Pro/Home Edition CD.
This will restore any broken or missing *.dll's that have become corrupt or weren't copied during the installation of Windows. The installation occasionally over looks that file as it is not a critical component as it can be installed later. But in my case, an Anti-Virus got in my merry way, and quietly prevented the activation of the *.dll file.
So if anyone else had or is having this problem, complete the steps above, and everything should run fine.
