Attached Applicant Biography:
Sam appears on the screen, dressed in formal interview clothes. He sits in the applicant processing room. His hands are folded on his lap, his brown hair cut short above his ears.
"Beginning recording, Applicant Samuel Vimes." says the interviewer.
Sam smiles and begins to speak.
"I suppose I'm here for the same reason that my predecessors were. To serve and protect, to show my patriotism. I've known that I wanted to join the Navy since I was a kid, listening to my dads tell me about their stories in the Service. I had planned to be an infantryman like them, but when I was fifteen I got my aeronautical piloting license. I had hoped to fly aerial troop transports but I was approached by a recruiter shortly after I enlisted with the Infantry, asking if I wanted to join up with the Space division. Then something sort of clicked, you know?"
Sam smiles, as if he's reliving a pleasant memory.
"Nobody in my family has left Manhattan since my great-grandma. My dads were so proud of me, hearing that I wanted to join up with the Space division. They got me this-" he says, pointing to a decorative Liberty Navy pin clipped above his right breast.
"My dads," he began again, "They've done so much for me through my life. You know, when they adopted me, they wanted a daughter. I seemed to fit the bill at the time, you know?" He laughs. "When I was growing up though, I never felt like a girl. When I acknowledged to myself and my dads that I was male, they accepted me all the same. I was eight at the time, and they didn't ever question my decision."
The interviewer holds up a prompt card.
"The most challenging thing in my life? Well, coming to terms with my gender identity was a huge personal challenge, since I went through some hormonal adjustments but if you mean a conflict-type challenge.. Well, when I was in the Academy there was this guy- I never learned his name. We started out with having a friendly rivalry that began to turn nasty. We were both jostling to get the top grade mark so we could fly the new Skybolt fighter that the Academy had brought in for the best of us."
"This rivalry started off with us simply trying our best to succeed. We were pretty close in skill, and I guess he felt threatened by me. Things started to get bad. I remember once he drugged my drink to try and flunk me out of the Academy. It was never linked back to him, so he was never punished. But it just got worse after that. He really crossed the line, though, when he tried to smother me in my bunk. Yeah. He was kicked out pretty quickly after that."
Sam scratched the side of his head. "I know I shouldn't sympathize with him, but that place was extremely stressful. Some people just crack under that much pressure, I guess."
The interviewer raises his hand, signalling that time was running out. Sam nodded.
"I just want to do my duty to my nation. I'll fly your planes between the stars or through the skies, and I'll make it look easy."
