I agree that nomads should get something so mine. However, azurite mining should be in a less remote location than the reactor, which is easier to access for non nomads. Somewhere in Delta would be a good place that provides an IRP justification for having a Freeport there. There should be several mining fields there. I also think that there should be at least one faction that can legally dock in house space that can mine azurite gas (or nomad remains). As it is, players are literally forced to do OORP stuff to be able to use nomad remains in bases.
Tbh I'm not sure how the nomad remains thing is balanced at the moment. What's the easiest way to get nomad BS remains? Is it possible to do so as a single player flying a Battleship, if yes where?

I am still hoping for the comprehensive mining update that I heard rumors about quite a while ago.
Agreed. Who is responsible for doing the mining update?

Centralisation of activity, Unification of fields and Reduction of mining systems and commodities is what is needed.
There should definitely be less mining systems, but more mining locations in one system to make mining and pirating less of a metagaming game. Giving existing mining IDs more equal bonuses is not going to "de-centralize", but increase IRP identification with characters and lead to less anonymity and better RP. Freelancers should get some mining bonus on fighters so its possible to work with noobs in mining without forcing them to set up a separate mining ship. Nomads should get something other to do than search for human players as their only activity.
