By having exclusive items, you put value on it, and it gives a sense of personal touch for people to have stuff they like. The moment you make it essentially a clone - well, not as interesting. Nothing wrong with a little pride for helping out.
You are correct, it is less interesting, but they still get to have a unique entry. The upside is that everyone else gets to have the bootleg version. If it's just an effect (like an engine, thruster, or a weapon that has the same stats as something that already exists), then sure, that can be exclusive. My main gripe with exclusivity is when there's a cool new thing that offers something new on the gameplay side of things but it's only available to one person. There's only so many things we can do to spice things up and limiting that further through exclusivity is something I'll never be able to get behind.
As long as unique stuff stays unique, I don't mind that. I just hate seeing people trying to get their hands on stuff that always was meant to be unique and created by people who put a lot of work into having these unique things, like the unique ship models that are in the game. Like, it shouldn't become an excuse to hand out those things, but rather encourage people to work towards their own things.
Updated public tutorials and publicly shared guidelines would helpful for such things, as right now, that system sounds a bit like a glorification for those who already learned all the stuff, instead of also opening things up for those who may have the spare time and motivation to also get to the point where they can contribute. Maybe even consider in-depth tutorials as a contribution itself.
The main thing that I dislike about making exclusive things open to everyone is that it doesn't always make sense from an inRP perspective, given that a lot of unique ships are commissioned only once by individual parties. I actually feel more like effects and the like should be the things that are less exclusive, because they tend to represent technology that could feasibly be replicated elsewhere. Meanwhile, unique ships are engineering projects that have to be undertaken with a lot of different factors considered that are harder to replicate on a mass scale, particularly given that mass production requires unique infrastructure.
On topic with the OP, I am not at all biased in this of course, being both a modeler and a person who wants a unique ship.

Contributor gets to have the original item, with its chosen name, visuals, stats, whatever, and everyone else gets an altered version. New name, new infocard (also referencing the original its based on), maybe slightly different stats and the effect for it adjusted slightly so it's not a carbon copy. That way people get exclusivity without the effort put into the item going to waste.
Didn't we have something similar to this in the past anyway? I remember people being paid billions for making trailers for Discovery. As of 7/5/2022 nobody is stopping people from mass producing effects for engines, thrusters, guns, ship models, whatever. If some guy comes into my DMs with a finished entry for a codegun with an infocard and effect ready I'll put it in the game. Don't see why the dude can't get like 250-500 million, some unique visual effect of his choosing on some ship he owns or a set of special event guns for it if it's great quality.
This. - For one, I've always thought that modellers should be able to get a 'free' character with and for every ship they've modelled in game. They made it, why shouldn't they get it in game? Imagine slaving away for hours to create this really sexy cap mesh, only for you to then need to grind a couple hours more to earn it in game. Wouldn't you say they've already earned it?
(I specifically like Pillow's idea of the creator getting the original. Adds the plus of allowing someone to claim the original ship name, kinda dope for capitals.)
In the past, we did have something similar to this, it was simply just the community at it's best. People with real useful skills got to make bank from those that grinded in game, who wanted shiny stuff either for the forums or otherwise. It still goes on, but in smaller quantities afaik. Nerva still offers his 3D gif skills for those that desire it I believe, I don't think he asks for a fixed price anymore, just a donation too.
I do believe the biggest problem here has already been stated; How do you effectively manage the system that determines whether or not a contributor is eligible for a reward, at what point are they considered to have done enough?
I reckon it'd be easy to draw up a reward tiering for modelling assets, but how do you cover the other areas?
Edit: Could you lump stuff together under a reward claim perhaps? E.g; Tier 1 Req: 1x Snub Model/1x Texture Map/4x Infocards/Sign up to Econ Devving forever.(Arbitrary numbers)
Tier 1 then providing some cash or goodies, the higher tier offering more, but requires more done to clock it in. This allows those that want a reward to request one based on the work done and those that don't, don't have to.
Yup, the 3d logo and spin gif service is still available and I only ask for donations. Thanks for the mention! @Jayenbee

Special skins, special effects etc.
But guns well, not a big Fan of it, even when they get special stats.
Agreed with the quoted posts, unique content for contributors, or any form of large credit donations can keep them interested in making content.
Unique content that doesn't impact gameplay in any way is perfectly fine, the problem arises when said content are dead content, as Pillow described it.
Such equipment, ships, etc. should have aesthetic changes only, stat changes that offer different ways to play game only for a special few is really something that Discovery Freelancer should avoid.

Aight, kinda forgor that this thread existed for a moment, so better late than never.
I'd honestly, as a modeller, settle for getting the ship for free, or the money to buy it, with a nice chunk extra on top to kit it out. It'd be cool perhaps to have the choice of a custom colour scheme, something that Modellers could easily sort themselves, but honestly what tempts me would be some sort of Custom FX on top of it... like some sort of trail or Wake-Effect, someone for shits and giggles might decide with that to make a NyanCat trail... which tbh we probably cant avoid something like that... but theres always the options for stuff like Fire, electricity, maybe something Nomad themed etc...
IDK I'm just floating ideas in all honesty, but the Ship and some cash in my case would be a good start IMHO, its easily adapted to other types of content, as stuff like Weapons and Engines also cost money, but I do hope to see something come of this, and hopefully pretty soon.
>>Literally just here to make ships, be worshipped like a God and get mad GC Puss as a result...<<
I remember that during the early 2013s, I had a thing going on where people would pitch into my bank for me to use the money to create characters and then content on. Perhaps having the admins give an account to current active content makers with X funds (without able to move it off said account) to make ships to cover and participate in events, etc, would be a neat thing.
