Why is it that any two-bit pirate or law enforcement (or, the worst, to me, faux lawmen) with a Supernova can give minimal RP and destroy a giant cargo hauler carrying millions of dollars worth of commodity in a single shot?

Discuss.

Because said giant cargo hauler failed to buy a shield and armour upgrade? I'd be seriously impressed if some random 'two bit' pirate/lawman took you out in a single shot when you had shields and armour on. Of course, then I'd ask the Admins to check his weapons and activated mods.

Besides, in my experience as a successful pirate, the only transports that will be instakilled by a Supernova strike to the hull are the -3000'ers. After that, you'll be left with at least a sliver of hull after the first shot.

Ships like the Shetland and Shire take a real beating. Admittedly you're probably not going to send the pirate home in a sandwich bag, but the survivability might be enough to make it to the nearest safe haven.

because a Supernova does X damage, a cargo ship has Y hull.

Y - X = -Y therefore the ship is destroyed.

Well, yes, admittedly it takes three Supernovas to take down said Transport if he doesn't use his batts and botts, but you get my point. The idea of one pirate taking down this huge cargo hauler, or a lone lawman with a bomber locking down the chokepoint of a smuggling run, strikes me as ridiculous. How can a ship that tiny possibly do that much damage to this hulking monstrosity, which cost several times what that puny little ship did? Everybody accepts it as balance, but I think that scale needs a few tons placed on one end.

And yes, this does indeed qualify as a 'hissy fit.' I get to have one of those once every three months. It's in my contract.

That I approve of so much.

My Pirate Trans (3400) dies instantly to a SNAC if I don't have a shield. Now that I've got a Mk5 armor though, I can live with almost two.

Pirates do far too much damage yes,

I have never once had escorts worthy of defending me.

Escorts shoot pirates, pirates shoot and kill me quick.

Stupid.

Law even arrives, pirates destroy me before they can help...

Well, the way I see it, it's like the way that back in World War 2, a submarine could sink a battleship. These aren't even battleship equivalents we're talking about here, they're merchant ships. Made for enormous amounts of cargo space, not durability. A trader isn't going to want to compromise 10% of his profit in extra hull thickness to protect against pirates who he might never meet, is he? And if he does, he can upgrade it himself.

We decided a long, long time ago that comparisons to WWII in Discovery balance was null, void and useless.

Moreover, since nobody cares about that, you know what a pirate should be flying?

A Submarine in Space.

Make them fly a small cruiser if they want to frag a transport with one ship. They don't get to blow you up with a ship the size of a dinghy. I forbid it.

EDIT: For the record, this applies to anybody in a bomber. The incident that prompted my ire was one of the aforementioned faux lawmen. I DO pirate once in a while myself, you know...the difference is that I'm willing not to make a profit at it.

1) It's because transports are balanced against the VHF. The dev's would probably prefer it if people pirated in VHF, so they've placed the transports at a level where piracy in a VHF is hard but not impossible. This unfortunately makes for an easy job when it comes to bombers. Bombers can't be nerfed in any significant way against transports because that would mean adversely affecting their anti-capital role.

2) A city costs more than a nuke, but the nuke'll still level it. Cost doesn't = survivability.
