I once had a friend who told me he used a joystick, like you would use for a flight simulator. Stick, throttle, fire buttons, extra buttons. etc.; In tandem with a keyboard and mouse for other operations than flight control.
Does anyone know how to get this to work? I'd really love to play with a joystick rather then a stupid mouse and keyboard. Flying would be so much more natural.

quite a while ago I attempted a joystick setup, here goes-
I used my Saitek joystick, left-handed setup with programmable software to issue roll/pitch/yaw from the arrow keys for R/P/Y assigned in freelancer tied into the Joysticks R/P/Y analog stick.
I set the "hat" key for strafe, used the trigger for thrust, three thumb buttons for missiles/mines/and recharges...not enough buttons on mine for everything.
Flew around for a wee bit without mouse flight, was doing circles and shooting in any direction feasible by the turrets/guns.
So- this setup let me turn, strafe, thrust, stop, all that jazz, and keep my mouse able to target and shoot anything in the turn radius of guns, sweet right?
BUT-
The reason I don't use this....... it takes loads of skill and articulation that even I, as a speed/death metal drummer, cannot pull of as efficiently as I can fly with the basic setup. Plus the gazillion buttons you need a a split second's notice have to be re-programmed into your head like your riding a new bike when your 2 years old and drunk.
Anyone accomplishes this and becomes skilled at it, I applaud you. Good luck. But now that I thought it all through AGAIN, I think I might try a whack at it some more.
Hope this helps, and worry not, I will only fly this on SP till I get it right and good, or quit at it again.
Well at least I have confirmation that at least two people have done it. It sounds really good to me. I mean most games you use joysticks and gamepads for anyway. Thanks.

yeah i had no idea it was possible, but i remember the discussions millions of years ago on lancers reactor on it, it followed a similar policy to discussing cloaking ships:P
but now i'm totaly going to have a try with the Xbox controller, at least for trading anyway
Ugh. Cloaks. I don't know why everyone shakes in their boots over the word cloak. Really if you put it inside of a ship as something that cannot be taken off then it poses little *real* threat other than scaring the crap out of unsuspecting people. Furthermore, if placed on a small ship, like a light fighter, a ship for recon purposes. It poses really no threat to anyone, other than recon.
So let's see...
Recon Ship -
Light Fighter Class(or even better, recon class with LF stats)
Only 3x class 5 or 6 Guns (So NPCs can't have their way with you)
CM (So it can run away)
And let's see. Priced around 50mil per ship?
But oh no... It would cause utter chaos to have something so non-threatening!!!!
Tekagis Treasure has about 15 ships with cloaks built into them. And let me tell you from personal experience on almost everyone of those ships. You really can't do much of anything but sneak around on people. As soon as you uncloak you are already vulnerable and open to be shot without being able to pose a threat and shoot back for at least 5 seconds. And if that isn't enough, once you do finally decloak you are left with only 2 or 3 weapons and maybe a torp or cd if you are lucky and they are only class 8's at the most and for that mod a class 8 sucks. Especially if you are trying to shoot something with a uber shield and armor you are totally SOL.
Sorry, I had to rant that. It's so silly and childish that we can't have cloaks on something cool like a harmless Recon LF.

to the joystick stuff, I programed left turn right turn up and down to the joystick movment as if when you moved it in those directions it pressed those keys. Worked but reaaaaallllllyyyy crappy. I have a thrustmaster setup and would love to use it.... but ut really doesn't work. If we had the tracking guns like starlancer, it would be awsome.
I remember long ago when Freelancer first came out that someone on Lancersreactor came up with a tool or program that allowed people to use joysticks in FL, dunno what happened to it though I found the mouse to be quite nice
I've experimented with Xpadder, but it's too slow to be of any real use.
