For those who aren't aware, a MUD is a text-based game, usually an RPG, where one can engage in combat, establish government, train skills, et cetera, all through a text console. These games are known for their immersion despite no actual graphical display or GUI.
Discovery already exhibits features of a MUD with various chat commands such as /help and /givecash. After seeing the addition of the /restart feature, I began thinking that Discovery might not be so dissimilar from a MUD. One moves around in the game world by actually flying there, yes, and shoots things by actually shooting, but many things are possible with the addition of more features.
Possible text-based additions:
Manufacturing/production (Use constituent goods to produce other goods)
Political systems (House gov't, faction leadership, and more)
Declarations of war
Faction rosters
Scheduling of battles ingame
Posting bounties on players, per system or all of Sirius
Posting advertisements for weapon deals ingame
Coordination of pirate attacks ingame, i.e. all Outcasts receive pirate broadcasts upon sign in
and much, much more!
I'd be willing to help with the scripting/coding for this. Information could be recorded in data files server-side. I'm not exactly sure how much is possible or doable, but I'd like to hear what people think.
Oh, it's all certainly possible.
The question is whether or not we want totally change the game Freelancer is and force Cannon to work harder than he already does.
I offered to write it, and I'm more than capable. The amount of work is not the limiting factor here. I believe these would add to the game without changing its fundamental nature.
You are in New York System. Below your ship is the blue atmosphere of Planet Manhattan. Within visible travelling distance are Newark Station of Interspace Commerce and Trenton Outpost of Universal Shipping. Also visible are three tradelane access points going WEST, SOUTH, and EAST.
> GO EAST
You enter the tradelane to go to Baltimore Shipyard. Halfway to your destination the lane is damaged. Before your vessel sits three 'Tridente' Outcast Gunships. Your ships' computer brings up names for the vessels. The names are hopy, ggggggggsssssss, and BrZrKr(RUS). You are being hailed.
> TALK
"6mil tax" is the beginning, middle and end of the transmission.
> PAY
Your credit resources are 535,671. You are unable to pay.
> NEGOTIATE
The pirates show no interest in negotiating. They begin to count down. "5, 4, 3, 2..."
> FIGHT
Your weaponry is useless against their powerful shielding, absorbing your Class 3 'Starbeam' Civilian Laser turrets' fire with no ill effect.
They return fire. ggggssss' Pulse Cannon inflicts 10000 damage to your shielding. Your ship is shieldless. BrZrKr(RUS) fires two 'Dragonfly' Blood Dragon missiles which begin to track your ship immediately.
> RUN
A cruise disruptor is fired and impacts your engines, disrupting the fusion buildup necessary for cruise speed.
> PAY
The pirates are no longer interested in communicating. Your blood is all they want now.
A missile impacts your vessel, inflicting 9000 damage to your hull. Fires break out as bulkheads collapse and fuel lines rupture. You have 700 HP left.

I probably don't understand what you're saying, because right now I'm going to point out that the stuff that is in the quote box can be done through the forums. Please elaborate...
You're missing the entire point. More like this. Inventory has 30 Mining Machinery and 300 Uncut Diamonds.
/manufacture diamonds 300 You have successfully cut 300 units of diamonds.
Then you fly normally to Manhattan and sell them in the normal fashion.
/vote kusari Sorry, you have the wrong IFF.
/vote liberty Here are the nominees for the President of Liberty Space:
1. Chris Gretzky
2. Maire Grimsdottir
3. Alan James
/vote 3 You have voted for Alan James.
Yes, this all can be done on the forums, but it would be better to have some of it ingame.
From what I can tell, folks here want to encourage others to come to the forums.
This would discourage it.

1. Forum based really, allows for you to actually lay out an argument etc.
2. We aren't voting ingame whether or not to declare war on someone. Considering that most factions are rail roaded in terms of major decisions, this would completely contradict it. In any case, it again needs major talking out on the forums.
3. Rosters might make sense but really don't serve a purpose.
4. Battles again ought to be scheduled on the forums, so people can talk about them properly.
5. The Bounty system is again needing to be forum based but something more ingame in terms of listings might be handy. (Eg /bounties Bretonia lists all bounties in Bretonia etc)
6. We don't really want spam in the game. If a weapons dealer is smart, he will post on the forums about deals etc and when he is ingame himself.
7. Groups handle that pretty well. A single broadcast to all people with a certain ID when they log in might work. A sort of MOTD type thing but ID specific. Set by who? Probably the main official faction for that npc faction.
