:yes::yes::yes:
It really does help.
I went from about 13 ships and 6 characters to 4 ships and 4 characters. It meant abondoning some factions and certain avenues of RP, but I don't regret it one bit.
When a character or faction ceases to be fun to you its time to consider moving on.
I have a similar problem as well. Losing interest, but still I keep staying here.
I've been here 2 years, and year I've been trying out factions and ships and what suits me best.
In the process I've ended up losing my interest in most factions as an independent player.
I've kept doing new characters to new factions always 'trying it out' and by doing so I don't get the best out of it like in official factions.
I've been part of quite many official factions; [MR], Samura|-, [RoS], Syn|, [KNF], BHG|, RepEx| and ]bd[. I've left each one of them within 1 or 2 weeks for simply boredom.
I hesitate to join official factions, because each time I've gained the guts to do so I end up leaving it because I get bored. In most cases it's been lack of company and stuff to do.
Only ship class left that I have interest in (As an independent player) are the capital ships,
but this is a two-way thing as I can't be assed to grind hundreds of millions of money just to enjoy more interesting and usually better roleplay.
(Personal preference. I haven't had any good roleplay in a fighter or bomber. It's always ended up in one liners and after that pew pew).
By doing this constant faction changing and playing only with independent characters, I'm always taking long breaks every once a while. Not long after I find myself running back, because of the great community this is.
Again the cycle begins; creating more and more characters in more factions until there's nothing left to interest me and I take my leave and come back later.
In my 2 years time I have enjoyed very little RP and PvP and mostly I've been setting up ships and fixing them perfectly (Yes, I am a perfectionist) matching the faction alingment. (Mapping, reputation sheet etc).
Should I just let it go or do you have any suggestions that could keep me flying a ship longer than a week?

Here's a couple things you might try. Kaz too.
Set up a great RP for the pilot. Set up a unique character flaw or strength that they can flaunt. One you can weave into you RP of them. The more you put into the character, chances are, the more interesting it will be for you.
Pick up a ship with multiple crew members and rinse and repeat the above. Have two different captains who hate eachother, have a love interest, etc. Be creative!
Also if you love an area, have a character on either side of the conflict. That way if it's an underpopulated system, you can hop on if anyone of the same/opposite comes on. Keep things interesting.
Another fun thing is doing strictly "roleplay" things and inviting random people. (This is actually where officially tagged people come in handy as well to have enemies etc.) For example, the other day I was leaving Liberty on my Gateway and I got a funny idea; I asked in system if anyone knew the Barrera Passage. Turns out someone did and I asked them to escort me and my scientists there through the pass. Really one of the most fun random RPs I've had lately.
If all else fails. Take a break. If it isn't fun; go outside, read a book, paint a painting, build something etc.
I got bored...took a few months off. Then borrowed a character and SNAC'd someone in the face which in turn gave me the adrenilline rush I was looking for.
I immediatly remembered how much I liked the game.
