I really hate creating yet another one of these threads about in game issues, but I have been thinking about this for a while and I can't make up my mind.

For the purposes of using an armor upgrade, is a gunboat considered a capital ship and thus requires the use of a capital armor upgrade and prohibits the use of the regular armor upgrade?

Or....something else?

I have seen quite a few gunboats with the regular ones...course I can't tell from a scan if it is mounted or just being carried around.

I can see good arguments both ways. It seems like the fighter armor shouldn't work for a larger ship like a gunboat. But at the same time, it's crazy to pay 800 whatever millions for a mark 8 capital armor upgrade for a gunboat that costs 20 million.

Given the threat of RP sanctions for equipment, I don't want to give it my best think so and take a risk.

depends. i consider my gunboats all caps, (i dont use anything bigger at all), so i have 2 cap mk 8s on my gunboats. the third one has a cap mk 7.

some people do moun the fighter ones, since it is cheap, and does do a good job, allowing you to live a bit longer.

i dont think its a necessity at all, but i think you can choose.

remember, cap upgrades do give much more armour (the cap mk 8 gives 4.0 armour multiplier, while the fighter mk 8 gives a 2,5 armour multiplier i think), so if u have nuff space and money, id say get a cap mak armour.

If you consider you pay 1-2M for a fighter and almost ten times that for the upgrade... I bought my first character's Mk8 armor upgrade by taking missions. A crazy man's job if you ask me nowadays and it must have taken me the same amount of time a transport character would take to buy a Mk8 capital armor.

But anyway... maybe the correct answer is that we'd need an aditional armor upgrade level for middle sized ships to make sense. Mounting the fighter version seems like you're "underdressed" and the capital version sounds like overkill.

To tell you the truth, the way we have it now, I'd tell you use the cap version, you can always discard the excess metal.:P

If there's a ruling about it I have no knowledge of it.

EDIT: I didn't know the capital armor added a bigger multiplier. I thought they just had different RP values. That's how much I understand about big ships.

yeah...i see no real problem using the normal armor upgrades on a GB as the cap armor upgrades are far superior...

IIRC, if you go to the right bases capship upgrade IV (x2.5 armor upgrade) costs about 12mil. Regular upgrade VIII (x2.5 armor upgrade) costs about 15mil, and it doesn't eat up 300 cargo space. I'm also not aware of any rule preventing capships from using regular armor upgrades. So unless you want a bonus greater than x2.5 (and plan on paying out the ears for it), then the regular version is the better buy.

quite easy - one is universal armor upgrade, which is more efficient, but more expensive

the other is especially for capital ships - less effective but less expensive. - you can put both armor upgrades on whatever you like - but it simply makes no sense to put a cap armor upgrade on .... lets say a freighter, cause there is no point in taking up 90% of your cargo with armor.

i have a universal upgrade on my GB, cause i think 2.5 is enough - and i did not care much for paying 1 million more for it.

I consider a Capital Armor Mark VI as standard for all my gunboats and cruisers. a Mark VII is a virtual necessity for a battleship; if one intends to spend weeks trading for that much money, another day or two to maximize on its armor potential won't hurt. Cap Armor MK VIII is something I can't really pay for in good conscience yet, so moo...

No cap upgrade is worth it IMHO. I don;t use them because I ENJOY doing things other then trading. That tiny little bit of a boost is not worth the extra week of shuttling back and forth.

I use lv 6 cap armor on whatever GB I have (heh, don't even have a cruiser now) - it's most cost-efficient and I still have the extra skin, needed to take on even the best-armored GBs of my opponents.

Trading for a cap mk 8 isnt that hard, but are you WILLING to pay nearly a billion credits for that tiny bit extra?

I wont do it, my Gb packs a cap armor mk7 and that really is my only capital ship. All ohters (except for Greenleaf, who has a special reason to mount a cap armor) carry the mk8 universal armor.

Didnt hear of any rules concerning this and i dont think there should be. People are given a choice now, pay more and be better protected. Or pay less and have more room for captured pilots:)
