Fair play- question of opinion or of ruling?

Fair play varies from person to person. It's normal, as we grew up, we all had different teachings and different morals. This makes fair play an opinion: for it to be a fact, we would need to make a rigorous research, reach a concensus and set limits. Limits that, even then, wouldn't be considered fair by all. The further we go into this, the more philosophical the concept of Fair play becomes. As stated before, though, until a concensus, Fair play is nothing but a question of opinion. Can we truly rule an opinion?

For me, fair play has nothing to do with in-game acts per se. Mostly, fair play for me is to give everyone the same basis, to make everyone equal when it comes to OOC, be they independent or official factions, and let them have their word to say in every events. If people buy capital ships (in this case, mostly independents), it is only fair to let them use them as they wish to, and not have official factions tell these people what to do with them. They will learn in time that there are rewards and consequences for their actions. Most of these independents haven't joined official factions only to get more freedom, freedom that they would appreciate to be respected. I also do not consider ganks to be against fair play, but rather a natural consequence of a multiplayer game.

As is cheating, griefing, RL drama, etc.

To not "gank", even if you have been "ganked" before (especially when it's against the same person(s) that did this to one before ), is not something many people are ready/able to do. Well, I guess some are even letting their (hidden) RL frustration get out with things like these.
I still find it a poor display of one's personality ganging up against others, just for the sake of winning, or even to harm someone for getting satisfaction from it (be it in a game or elsewhere...).

I'm not trying to be a moralizer, not trying to change anybody, just stating my opinion.

In the end: Yes I think it is personal opinion, and no I don't think it can be ruled.

You cannot rule fair-play. It is question of opinion of course.
Take 3 new players vs 1 experienced- the one ganks them since he have more skill. My best is 7 vs me and I won but it means nothing since there are people who can kill 7 pilots with average skills like me alone. You simply cannot rule it, it is meter of common sense, I try to react on the situation actually, I just respond in a way that I am approached, if group X do fair fights I fight them fair, if they gank me I gank them back.
The same as piracy, what is reasonable demand? For who? For me it could be 5 mill for other 1 and for third 100k will be enough and so on. More rules wont help anyone, more mutual respect between different parties will help a lot, after all it is 10 years old space boat game, not worth enough to be angry about it.
Capital ship dilemma is really easy one. Giving the official factions several buffed ones will solve it gently. Under buffed I dont understand overpowered. I see reasonable if they have just better armour update(5X or 6X) for example and a bit better guns( like 3-7% more then the normal ones or faction specific one). So everybody will be happy.

Official faction players that are often accused of elitism, never deploy them and have those weird, immersion killing "fair fight/dueling" suicidal hobbies. (yes, i've seen enough of those lolduels, where house military with overwhelming force on the field willingly loses a pilot in a duel. ffs.)

The sad reality is that few people gain a sense of fair play when they are independent and have a capital ship...far too many examples on the server, people playing for years still do childish things with the reasoning " I mined like a drone for 1 month I bought this cap-ship, I can kill you puny-lonely-sabre, because I earned the right". Then again I have seen people improve vastly, and I believe it's them that give us a sense of hope for the community

A consensus about any issue is nothing more than multiple similar opinions, and ruling upon a consensus is one group asserting itself over the others, much like an individual doing the same to another.

Fair play is all about opinion, as is happiness or stress, to name two issues that have been researched extensively that are just as subjective (and apparently there is even a formula for happiness...).

What is important is not the conversion of opinion towards a particular point on this (or any) issue, but the tolerance of individuals towards others. Often one can hear "Why should I change how I play? It's my right to play how I do." That's absolutely right, but if everyone takes this view, you will be on the recieving end of just as much crap as everyone else is. At this point, I can draw similarities between the situation of "fair play" and game theory, specifically the prisoner's dilemma. This is very relevant theory about human behaviour in situations such as this.

Put simply, people make life harder for themselves and for others if they cannot communicate and coordinate with each other, or if they take advantage of each others' good nature. As we are naturally selfish beings, cooperation on a range of issues including fair play is simply not possible in the longer term (unless a very self-supporting social structure is built to heavily encourage this kind of cooperation).

I have my preferences, you have yours. If you cater to the needs of others, you may find yours catered to in turn. What goes around comes around, after all.

Go play the game, within the given limitations. That is how role play games are played. Not by trying to work around those limitations or whining about them.

From their point of view they are in their right, from the kids point of view they are unfair bastards. All it takes is a biased bystander who doesn't interfere...
