I was in the mood of playing trough the SP campaign again, last time I remember that I played the SP campaign up to Tegakis arch and the game crashed repeatedly for me.
4.84 was said to be stable enough to play the SP campaign in..
I think you won't have technical difficulties. You'll have regular-ones. The vanilla campaign with improved NPC AI and their regen-use made the first part of the game (until you get a decent ship) insanely hard. I did the first couple missions, and I was sweating blood to the point I gave up. I suggest you to cheat.
No h4x. Chain guns are your best friends in the campaign. As well as new torpedo LFs you can find here and there - Somtaaw, Kiith Raider or something like that, those thingies. With those it's just retardedly easy.
Other than that, no idea. Worked perfectly for me all the way through.

Yes what this man said... grab the LF sold on the battleship in Cambridge. After that the Tau-29 campaign is like an 80's arcade game.
I think I got as far as the Frankfurt campaign, but blowing up the Nomad BS takes *ages* coz of the huge hitpoints. I got bored and gave up.
