Freelancer Alpha wasn't cancelled due to budget cuts. It was because Microsoft bought Digital Anvil and decided to rush its release, leaving most of the Alpha content out.
I wish they'd do a release of some of the development materials... that would be a real treat. Like, what did they use to make cut scenes? Don't even tell me that someone calculated & hardcoded NPC paths and gestures in LUA scripts. I can't even find a working compiler. No, I imagine there was some tool that none of us will ever see.

Yep. FL was originally slated to have 4k online seamless multiplayer, a completely dynamic economy, almost realistic (nor orbiter level of course) physics, ramming damage (if you hit a roid your wing would get smashed and ripped off, and if your engines were there you would find yourself flying in circles).
