An inexperienced solo pirate often makes no money at all. I tried piracy a few times, succeeded not really often, so I would not say you can make a lot of money by it if you don't really have the hang of it.
Best money making: trading. Afk trading, system player list scanning, do something else on a 2nd computer. Every 3 minutes, one "go-to" click.
Best fun money making: Join a mining faction that does Teamplay. Mine, transport, encounter pirates, etc... but you will make less than the afk-powertrader.

I have only three letters for that: WOW! :)
My best is around 500-600 mill in 2 days, but I made usually around 5 mill max per hour as pirate if you count it like that because it could happen that you cannot catch anything. Even if you work in group sometimes is hard to make money as pirate - sometimes you make a lot sometimes nothing so if you took both then you go under 5 mill per hour. Same with bounty hunting- if you have good team you can score 40 mill for 20 min and then go one week without a kill- it is very time /group/skill dependable.
So that's why trading and mining is much more profitable.

I spose trading is far more likely to yield positive results.
I mean I've done about 5 trade missions today. Earned 50 mil and encountered 0 pirates. Not even having to evade.
I spose its all about timezones and probabilites.
If I was to spend the time I spent this morning pirateing instead of tradeing I probably would have made 0. Because there was hardly anyone around. It wasen't as much an issue of there being no pirates, more that there was nobody at all.
The only guys I saw in all the time tradeing was 2 =LSF= guys.
"making more money" depends on the time each one is willing to invest, some things get boring really fast.
Hauling ore the same way up and down the whole time gives you a constant high supply of money, but gets boring pretty fast.
Pirating on the other hand gives you new situations each time you meet another trader, but the money gain is less relyable.
Powertrading is probably less money-effective then both of those earlier examples, but however (if you got your several-stations-route all through Sirius/Rheinland/Bretonia...) can indeed be really interesting, you visit new places and meet new people, since you're in constant movement.
I guess i made the most money via two ways:
1.Ore hauling, in team with a Hegemon miner that mined during my travels and yet just took 40% of the Ore Profit, due to the higher risk on lanes. Hauling Ore on the way to, taking other goods the way back, and have a fresh load waiting for you in the fields without waiting time.
2. Pirating in a Transport (people seem to be more willingly to talk if they know you can make good use of their hold as well - in contrary to a Bomber where the Trader just can go "okay shoot me and you will get nothing"), using "spare time" and times when the server population was low to pirate 20k-NPC-Transports for Hfuel and other precious goods.
Disclaimer: I have to admit, i never really pirated for Ores, too much Q_Q and Oorp in the fields, so i am not aware of the ammount of money that specialised ore pirates make.

Edit:
Also a way to quick money is to browse the open market for cheap CAU8's/Stuff and to resell them for more profit.
