I recently saw on the forums that the Outcast faction has become a bit inactive, so I made a bomber to see for myself. Aside from being some what ignored when attempting to RP with a group, the thread was correct every one just sat in Alpha, however something struck me as odd.
A Maltese based faction, using Spanish greetings and words? I dare say someone has brought this up previously but shouldn't the Maltese be speaking, well Maltese or in the very least Italian?
I may be splitting hairs here but it seems really strange to ignore the obvious base of the Outcasts, granted the Freelancer devs stuck the Maltese with the Spanish for some bizarre reason, and have them speak Spanish which has never been one of their offical languages rather then Italian their third most spoken langauge (Maltese and English being the first and second respectively).
Wouldn't it add a bit more variety and distance from the Corsairs to change the Outcast base language to Italian?

Well, both factions originate from Hispania sleeper ship, and I'm not sure if I'm correct here, but Crete and Malta were both islands once under Hispania control, althought at their very borders, in this case the names would fit.
All OC character names of mine that I have/had are Italian. No one is going to stop you using Italian words, specialy that they do have Italian influence. Sairs are more into Mexican & Arabs.
I always considered Outcasts more of Italian people. Dunno about usage of Italian language, I guess it's easier to get used to spelling "Buenas dias" instead of "Buongiorno", etc...

Thing is... they came to sirius with the same sleeper ship which had quite a mix of Mediterranean cultures aboard so pretty much everything is allowed within both of them. While it is assumed that more Italians stayed with the Outcasts and more Spanish with the Corsairs, the resulting nations still are a mix of everything that was aboard.
So it's basically up to you what you are going to use. Just don't go "bonjour" at someone or you might get killed.
The reason people are using the words they use is that they know their meaning. At least they are at least using existing words. Did you ever try Rheinland? Oh my god...

Bla i go with the theory that so far in the future languages are probably so mixed, and same with races that my Outcast just speaks English. Plain and simple. For example. I have a chinese friend knows not a word of chinese. Friend from Pakistan knows only mother/father in his language. Japanese friend knows zero Japanese. I Myself have a french mother, but cannot speak french, only understand it.
So in Future People may, or may not know thier own language, or hell there could be an all new language with a mix/match of everything. So why bring Cultures into a space game?

I'd guess that with the 3 last AC games, a few italian words would slip to the "slang"
