In my time around the block I seem to run into as many Pirate GB as snubs. My talon is no match for a GB on the best of days. Even tried loading the thing with nothing but paralyzing missiles, cannonball missiles, and a mini razor. The ship just can't do enough damage fast enough to bother. Perhaps if I was a fantastic pilot, but I'm still learning and tend to always be on the receiving end of the "BOOM" in pvp fights of any kind. (Damned if I don't make that explosion look sexy though! ) Eventually, I will get better, so I want to ask...
Can an average bomber pilot take on an average Gun Boat pilot? The Raven's Talon is just fine for snubs, but with the amount of Gun Boats out there, I thought about getting a fighter as a back up. The idea being, if I spot a Gun Boat pirate, I fly back to base and break out the bomber. I'm not sure if that would really tip the scales though. Should Gun Boat only be taken on with a pack mentality?
And before you start, I know skill has a lot to do with it and i am sure there are snubs out there that eat Gun Boat for lunch with a side of fries. I am asking about conventional wisdom.
An average bomber won't never ever take on an average GB pilot
Average GB pilot= sitting somewhere while zooming 1000k away. Sadly you won't be able to.
The best way to kill a gunboat is taking a cruiser, if you both are average you'll surely kill it. Or call a few friends and bomberswarm it. That's funnier.

No. A competent gunboat pilot can kill one snub without any trouble. On the other hand, snubs have significantly higher thruster speed, and you are supposed to leave the area rather than stay and fight against impossible odds.
Gunboats are essentially anti-snub area-denial vessels, they will kill all the snubs that fight them, and none of the ones that don't.
A good good bomber pilot CAN POSSIBLY solo an average GB pilot. I suggest trying the insta method, via SNAC+full load of Hellfires. I've seen it done, but that takes some practice (and doesn't work against Gunships).
I am unfamiliar with the difference between a gunboat and gunship. Is one just a souped up version of the other?
Otherwise what I am getting is that it might be worth trying in the future when I find a thing call skill (think I saw some in the couch cushions the other day) but for now, just stick to other snubs?
Gunships (that you don't wana fight with bombers): LR GB, Bottlenose, Gaian GB. Those are the ones you probably don't every wana try to solo, might include the Liberty GB and Asco to that list because they're hard to hit as-well.
You say you are still learning. So... just don't fight GBs with anything smaller, except if you have a lot of the small stuff.
GB is best fought in a GB. If you are in a weak GB or not really skilled in it, better have GB+1 snub. 1 GB + 1 bomber works fine against a GB.
1 Cruiser vs. 1 Gb is safe. But he will run off and you will not kill him either if he doesn't want to.
If you want to go with snubs:
3 average bombers can take out 1 big-easy-to-hit GB, but might lose a lot of bots in the process.
> 3 is a rather safe win.
< 3 is a rather safe defeat.
I haven't seen bombers soloing Gbs in this version... and from all the GB-bomber encounters I doubt that any half-decent GB ever dies against a single bomber.
If you want to fight good GB pilots that fly good GBs/GSs in bombers: bring 5. Not kidding. It's no gank. It's just... necessary.
Just... get used to the thought that the GB is -the- universal class atm. Will likely change. We'll see.
Mind... this is no "GB too strong!" rant. I like them. They solve my "cannot hit a barn" problem.

This works on nub GBs with low level armour that rebot slowly, you can combine it with screamer mines to take down their shields.
You got no chance vs nornal GB pilot.
Mostly I try anyway- when I realise that I cannot win I just run away.

(yes, i've seen enough of those lolduels, where house military with overwhelming force on the field willingly loses a pilot in a duel. ffs.)

Work's on CAU8 KuEx GBs (I got lolblasted by some IMG). Or anything that has ~116k base hull with a CAU8 slapped on it or lower. It can work even against the best of fellas.
A Bounty Hunter bomber with full Hellfirs can sling out all that dammage in just under 3 seconds. I've found it quite effective against things like CAU8 Cloaking Ptrans, CAU8 Tridentes, CAU8 Libby GB (we wont say he was a pro but he wasn't an idiot either), CAU6 Imperators.
If you're in a group with even one more (normal) bomber to help deshield it becomes even easier.
It's possible, just, not likely against agile GBs or good GB pilots who know what's happening and quick to nanobot up. (I find that blasting 70 hellfires in 2.9 seconds tends to lag up the game for a sec and they wont be able to nano up anyways)
