I just came across a pair of Zoner Whales jumping from New London to Leeds, and when they got in range of the gate to quick dock, the jump gate didn't even 'open'. The ships just jumped away very quickly.
I don't think they jumped since they weren't carrying any fuel.
I've never seen this bug, if its even a bug happen before.

This is related to lag. Happens to me quite a lot - sometimes the client issues the order to jump, the server doesn't get the command, but the client is already trying to dock. The server then double-times you into the jump tunnel, resulting in the jump gate animation not kicking in.
It's actually possible to speed dock with jumpgates. It's not as easy as other speed docks, but still possible. It's also easier in some ships than others, no idea about how easy it might be on the whale, but it's pretty much what you're describing: Ship gets close enough to the gate and jumps without waiting for the gate to actually open.
I pretty much speed dock with jump gates all the time, I tend to wait to the apex of where the 'claws' would meet if they were able to touch in the hole.
If you are in a suitably large ship, you can pretty much ram the arms/claws of the gate and dock before it opens, which would be speed-docking. You can also do it from the sides if your ship is large enough.
I guess it might be for the reasons jammi gave.
