The Battleship Koblenz was commissioned in 813 AS alongside its sister ships Westfalen and Karlsruhe. Intended to revitalize the chronically under-equipped Rheinland Military, the Koblenz was initially deployed to Frankfurt to respond to aggressive pirate attacks along Rheinland’s northern borders. The novice battlegroup met its first serious test with the Corsair invasion of Frankfurt in 815 AS, as hundreds of strike craft poured into the system from the Sigmas. While the Koblenz successfully repelled the incursions with RFP and Bundschuh assistance, it came at a bloody cost in lost pilots.
The Koblenz saw brief service during the opening months of the Hudson War, taking heavy damage during an engagement in Hudson with the Liberty battleship Whitefield. Following emergency repairs at Alster Shipyard, the Koblenz was returned to Frankfurt amid fears that newly identified construction flaws had undermined its combat performance. It continued in these duties until 827 AS, repelling multiple GMG raids from Sigma-13 during the Saigon War. The Koblenz’s senior officers were fervent members of the Imperial cause, having long resented the chronic mismanagement of the Rheinland Military. On the outbreak of the Rheinland Civil War, they were tasked with capturing Schatten Research Facility before a cohesive resistance could form.
Many junior crew members were outraged by this treason, and a mutiny broke out onboard. While the pro-Imperial faction ultimately prevailed, the Koblenz was left severely under-manned. Still believing a fait accompli could be achieved, the Imperial commanders pressed the attack on Schatten. The Koblenz rapidly overran the confused defenders, however its forces were trapped inside the Sector-7 minefield when the Federalist Battleship Bayern deployed from Thuringia and attacked. The Koblenz was destroyed in the resulting battle, providing a rallying victory that unified scattered Federalist forces. As of 831 AS, the wreckage has been towed to Schatten’s drydocks for destructive testing and eventual disposal.
