I'm a real dumbo when it comes to Hard ware / Soft Ware.
Its seems from my view, that all the troubles started when the server was DDOS ( What ever that means) .
What does a 'DDOS' do to the server ? Does it re-write codes or something .
Moving the server is fine, i can understand that, but why is the server crashing evertime it gets over loaded - due to the move?
ANOTHER question is : What caused the bugs to randomly appear ? ( If they did)
Final one. What does ' splitting the server' Mean ? after you answered these questions please, simplify them.

A little update. I've tracked down the cause of 3 of the last 5 crashes. After the next crash the fix will take effect.
I'm aware that /movechar and possibly /renameme is broken. I'll be fixing this soon.
It'll take about a week to fix most of the reliability problems.

We haven't moved the physical server. We have moved the server to a rented host and it runs 64 bit Windows 2008. The O/S change has caused a number of the problems.
We could get a better rented host but the price starts to get prohibitive (260-300 USD / month).

We plan to run multiple copies of FLServer so that we can access the other cores on the machine better. This will be done in a way that is transparent to players.
Quote:Why can't we move the old server to the new location?
We could although we'd need to do put in it a rack mount case. The major factor is that co-location costs for 2-4U of rack space is not cheap and we run this operation as cheaply as possible.

A DOS is a Denial Of Service attack.
Think of it as having people all call one phone number so that legit incoming calls cant get thru, execpt with computers. The incoming calls (connections) block you from being able to access the site legitimitley, or at least without very spotty access (IE: one minute it loads fine, next two you cant connect).
The same thing happens whenever some really small site gets mentiond on the news, everyone and his brother visit it, and suddenly the site is 'down'.
A DOS attack usualy doesnt damage the server, it just keeps people from connecting to it.
I've updated the server to reduce the load when players connect. Some of the major lag spikes were caused by economy updates when players connect.
I've changed the system so that you only receive economy updates when you enter a base for the first time. This means that your commodities trade route screen might be wrong if you haven't entered the base since logging into the server.
Nb. If your market data is updated, you'll see a little message "Updating market data..."
