Because they were the Core of the Bounty Hunters Guild (back when it was BHG Core). Simply put, an assortment of the best hunters in the entire Guild assigned to undertake the toughest bounties against the Corsairs and the Maltese. Of course in modern times that's lost it's meaning because The Core is no longer connected to the Bounty Hunters Guild, however instead of renaming the faction entirely I kept it with Core because that's the iconic name everyone is used to. I'll probably end up turning Core into C.O.R.E - so an anagram of something (Combined Omicron/Omega R-something E-something) - and rolling with that instead.

I like how their origins and manufacturer are kept ambiguous and up to player interpretation. Personally I've always had the fantasy:-
They were made by a small independent and anonymous arms producer who used alien technology to create them. Eventually said arms manufactuer realised he was being spied on by [intelligence faction here] and had to quickly get rid of all the codenames. Somehow these found their ways into the hands of certain pilots, who's ships later became wrecks.
Or a less mundane idea: The codenames were created by a mysterious and untraceable arms manufactuer. Rumor had it that said arms manufacturer was linked to the occult and some say it was the devil himself. Whilst many pilots purchased the goods produced by this arms manufacturer, most would end up dead of suffer a foul incident (the wrecks).
Iconic may be a little bit of a stretch, along with that abbrevation (anagrams are words made from re-arranging the letters of a word e.g. Made - Edam, Dame) but whatever floats your boat(s).

I guess they were made by facilities like those House research stations hidden deep within nebulae, or by organizations like the Order. They mounted the experimental weapons for testing on their ships piloted by good pilots, who they sent on difficult tasks. Some didn't return. While there are a few pieces of equipment like this that have been lost, I guess that most are currently in use. Not on by the NPCs of course, as they are "rookies" or "automated patrols".
