I do 500k for each 1000 cargo units.
And if they dont pay, well, they get lit up, and i tractor in the cargo and sell it.
Simple as that. Not to lulzy when it comes to amount.
This Galaxy is vast; its wonders and beauty are almost unfathomable. But the galaxy also hides dark secrets, some of which have lain dormant since the beginning of time itself. There is a danger in secrets, both in seeking and in knowing. Some things are meant to be hidden from view. Some mysteries defy understanding, and sometimes even the things we think we know are untrue. Some secrets should remain untouched.

I mean.. If someone really wanted to sanction the pirate for changing their demand from credits to cargo, after the trader told the pirate that they cannot afford the credit demand.. Would that truly be a justified sanction? If I were the pirate and attempting to accommodate the trader's request, it'd be pretty scummy of the trader to sanction the generosity.
@Calo: Based on your quote, it seems like you're misunderstanding the rule. It says, "Only one monetary or cargo demand can be issued during each piracy interaction."
So, when you pick a mark, you have to decide if you want money or cargo. You appear to get that part. Where it seems you misunderstand is in its rigidness.
RP encounters are not rigid, but very fluid things. When I get pirated, I treat it as a cost of doing business. That cost, however, is always up for negotiation. That negotiation could lead to anything. Paying money or giving some cargo, giving a little of both, my escape, the destruction of my ship, me calling & stalling for re-enforcements to arrive to destroy your ship or even offering you escort employment as a temp bodyguard...it all just depends on each individual interaction.
Like I said, fluid.
& it ain't against the rules to go with the flow of the RP
@Marburg That's what I have been doing since 2011 until rule got updated upon my return. I've been told that nowadays I can't change my demand, else I might be sanctioned for that - and took that information for granted, since it was said by official faction member.
If Pirate player put him self in trader place and think : " What will be wiling to pay in his place ? " , he will now what reason demand is , and what is not in reason . Only way he cant know what is in boundaries of reason demand , is if he don't care is demand reasonable or not .
For example , if i stop Mammoth transport caring 2200 Boron or something and ask more than 2 M , i testing boundaries of reason , if i ask more than 5 , i trolling and ask excuse to kill him .
If i do same with 5000 transport , it is not same , cause if he has 5000 ship , he can afford more demands for sure , and just because he is empty or have cheap cargo now , dosent mean he wont pay . 5 M demand also allows him free passage from me in that system , so he will pay . If he carry ore , he can and will easily pay 10 M , and if he gives me trouble ( dont want to stop , try to flee ) , i include "chasing expenses fee" by increasing demand by 50 % ( In history , Pirates alwais used terror to scare victims not to offer any resistance , so 50 % more will tech them to obey and not flee next time they see me ) .
Anything more that that , or asking more than 50 % of cargo ( ore ) is not reasonable by my reasoning of things , ( not by troling reasoning of things ) . Cause if he pay let say for Gold Ore 3250 x 5000 > 16 M for ore , and you ask more than half , that leaves him less than 9000 x 2500 < 25 M , he will cover expenses and get in minimum profit , IF he don't get in to another Pirate , wasted time in mining and traveling not included .
Long story = shot :
Use brain as Pirate ( and Trader to ) and there will be no un-resonable demands ( Zombies may ask SRP to not use Brain ) , team will deal less with our nonsense and they can focus on things like fixing Fart ( ahem Maxim ) gun .
There's a catch, Sasa: there's a lot of traders which either go full silence or simply state 'kill me'. I got tired to the point I don't try to explain in PM what they did wrong, because every time I kill such a trader they are like "enjoy your time wasted, idiot" or "don't PM me" - and demand isn't that big taking into account ship they usually have. Hell, I honestly got tired to even report the latter kind of players for ooRP behavior - which is 'kill me its cheaper'.
The real traders would do everything to survive - even kind of things which are way out of PG-13.
RP it out. If you are in for the cash then its meh. I am in for the fun!
Also I ask on how much they are willing to pay me for their cargo. Interact, roleplay = profit. Had a guy send me millions after he left just stating he enjoyed the encounter.
As a trader ( I *used* to be a Trader, note the difference), I don't mind paying pirates.... If the demand is reasonable.
Considering the ships I fly when I do most of trading (BW Trans & Bison) I don't mind paying upwards of 2 mill, as I will usually be making 10 odd mill on most runs.
It's a little easier if there is some RP involved, even if I do suck at RP myself, the funnier the better, for preference.
If I can, I like to to keep moving, even it's just a little bit and I really hate having my shields shot down, because that means I not only have to give you credits, I also have to repair any damage that happens from 'overflow' left over after the shields go down.
500k per 1000 cargo sounds very reasonable to me, the Pirate makes credits, I get to make a reasonable profit and maybe we both get to RP a bit and go on our way, one a little richer, one a little poorer and hopefully with no damage to anyone.
However, (you knew this was coming), if the demand is unreasonable, as in it totally kills any chance of me making a decent profit for the run (some trade runs are loooong), I'm going to try to run, fight or BOTH and we all know how that turns out most of the time.
From my point of view, Pirates who make unreasonable demands are after the old 'blue message' more than anything else.
