What I do:
Go to somewhere, doesn't matter.
Figure out what sells best there.
Take that to somewhere that buys it for a good price.
Repeat
It works very well for my trader's rp because he's not really got the smarts to work through complicated things like planning. It's also fun because you never really get bored because it's quite random sometimes.
Does require a nearly if not totally neutral reputation though...
Ichtan is right, the trick to learn good traderoutes is a nearly full database of prices, meaning you need to dock anywhere you come. I dock every base i see with my traders, making a decent list of buyers for every commodity.
You dont have to sort your rep first, just be sure that your rep makes sense with the affiliation you choose. That way you can make sure that you dont dock on places where you shouldnt be allowed.
There are some top-$$ routes both lawfull and unlawfull. When im in a good day (and good ship with 4500+ cargo) i can make at least 20mil a run.
The route i fly with my adv train and 4994 cargohold makes 21.232.067 mil a run. That means from start to start:)
If you cant find some places, ask fellow traders if you can join them to their destination.
