I have no idea what I have run into here. I am playing the single player missions. I have succesfully improved my play to deal with the improved AI but now I am completely defeated.
I am in the last mission with Juni where we decide to run from Liberty space. The Thief has just died and I launch into space to follow Juni. And I just die.
I mean it is insane. I am under heavy turret fire and nearly destroyed from BattleShip fire before the movie even ends and I get control of my ship. Game play begins and before I can hit a key on my keyboard I am blown to bits. This is really not a fun place to be in.
I don't know what was done to the game to create this situation but I would really like to find some solution.
Gotta have your finger ready on the "F" and "G" keys (nanobots/batteries), and just mash then when you regain control f your ship. Oh, and dodge. Dodge a LOT.
I suggest playing the Non-discovery single player first, if you haven't already. Discovery SP is very, very hard, or takes a LOT of time and patience.
Option 2) Get the Ioncross save editor, give yourself an Admin shield and some admin cannons, and rip through everything in sight while laughing maniacally!
This is a VERY common problem. Your survival depends on luck, patience, and correct timing. The second you gain control of your ship, hit the afterburner and dodge as much as you can. Also (this part is basically luck), you have to get lucky and hope the battleship won't fire two energy bolts quickly. Basically, if the battleship shoots two bolts in quick succession, right as you gain control of your ship, one will hit your shield, wiping it out, and the other will hit your hull, destroying you. Hopefully, only one, or none will hit you. If that happens, you can usually survive.

Can't you just change that 1.00 thing to 0.00? Yes/no?
Eh, that too. Blowing everything up singlehandedly is decidedly funner, though. Especially when you're about to have an aneurysm from dieing over, and over, and OVER again...

Funny thing is, I did that mission first time no problems. Thruster is your best freind people! I managed to take out the wing of defenders too, before getting greedy and trying to get the last shot on the Unity... I didn't count on the Cruisr escorts... I stopped playing SP after leaving Bretonia though.
Note: I have Ioncross SP editor and the bloody thing dosn't recognise mods, and will only let me change vanillia aspects of the game! No modded ships... No modded equiptment... Oh the pain! What did you guys do?

Now maby I am just lucky but I have never had a problem with that mission in discovery, I don't even go all out dodging I still attack the fighters.
The hardest mission in my opinion in the entire discovery SP is the one in Tau-29 when the Rheinland fleet attacks you, only way I have found to do that is by hitting cruise and letting invunerable NPC's do the work but it takes about half an hour for them to kill the BS... It was a few versions ago when I tryed the Rheinland fight but I could have swore they made it easier or somthing and I have tryed the Liberty bit in this version and still no problem.

I've been mildly miffed by one-shot weapons since their implementation, oh so long ago. I remember the days when fights were a matter of who could aim better, rather than who could aim a single shot. - Virus
Kiggles! Did you just come back now, or did I miss something?!
Anyway, welcome back again:).
The Tau 29 mission against the Rheinland fleet is the one I get stuck on. Even with a full-fat fighter with armour and level 10 guns, its quite challenging. The only way to do it is let the invulnerable NPCs do it as you say. The one where you escape from Liberty is quite challenging but you dont have to dodge for very long until you essentially get rescued.
