Lore wise, it makes sense that Zoners would be able to mine, and be very good at it (as far as my understanding goes). For player interaction though, what Echo 7-7 said.

Go to the iridium field and mine. ( Best selling price is in picardy, 6400k each ). Good if you got junkers doing cryocubes for you ( or indie gauls for that matter ).
Thank you. I will have to give it a go.

Not going to talk about player interaction, because the right to land in house space and have access to an innumerable amount of extra trade routes is what already separates player interaction.
But yes, lore wise the current situation makes no sense.

I should say role-play wise, since lore seems to have deviated from Discovery quite a bit.
Zoners in the edge worlds trading in resources that are scarce and not found in house space? I assume they would either have to trade with someone out there or mine to get something, and there's not really much out there except for Nomads. So, I am going to go with mining.
Clarification: when I say Zoners are not a mining faction, this is in comparison to the factions whose primary focuses are mining (img, Kruger). I personally wouldn't rule out the roleplay existence of Zoner miners.

But Admins do even if they agreed to have no mining bonus: http://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=30968
ZoE was declined officiallity and it was backed up with the zoners don't mine lore thing even if they were quite ok to mine for RP and without mining bonus. The official request looks deleted however.

Also, when I saw the title, I sort of misunderstood it. Made me chuckle.
Please note that the BHG field in Delta is potentially a good place for 'mining accidents' to happen to your ship. I know we haven't been that active lately out there simply due to RL stuff by some of our upper management (Implo is out for about a month, and I'm working about 60 hours a week now), but we sort of consider that field our own little mining ground.

The common joke is that mining pilots and crew puts Human Organs in your hold, but I'm not so sure what the Zoner biology is like these days. Maybe Commonwealth Zoners give the Gallic human ore: Wine!
