Hmm ... perhaps you MAY have a point here. This does give evidence when someone is swapping characters in the middle of a fight.
I personally don't see the role play in swapping characters while you're on your trader to get into your bounty hunter and chase a target just because you see him login. If you wanna hunt for bounties ... login to your bounty hunter and keep an eye on the LR scanners.
Quite a conclusion you leap to. ALL I do is sit in my hunter. And I role play being bored plenty. The name thing popping up makes me go "oooh...whats this..new contact on the scanner..." Ive spent literally hours chasing people around only to have them log off when I come near to their system, so it's a two way street.
OK for gentle RP, OK for gentle PvP too. What do you prefer ?

I see that there are a few pros and cons to this idea.
pros
Stops pollution of server chat (extremely annoying when trying to get a clear screen sometimes)
Stops OORP char hopping
cons
stops us seeing when mates have come on (some peeps dont have skype/xfire)
In the list that most of the time is 100 + finding that bounty is elusive at best if the chat option would be removed.
Client side i think is the best option if it is possible, if not a kind of server command like /block Player message

How'd you figure that? The way I see it removing login/out messages would make this problem worse, seeing as there will be fewer ways of telling who's switched characters. The only way it will stop OoRP character hopping is if you adopt the blind 'out of sight out of mind' perspective.
While it can be annoying, i'm in favour of keeping it. It does indeed make it easier to keep tabs on F1'ers, who's logging on/off/switching characters etc. Its more useful having it than not having it.

Again, I'm in favor of keeping because of F1 violators. Life would be much harder if you didn't see stuff like this:
HonestPirate: You know there's a 2 million credit fee to use this trade lane, right?
[ROFL]TrAdEr: f u n00b! :) Departing Player: [ROFL]TrAdEr
Now, making it a client side option isn't a bad idea. Alternately, I wold be in favor of putting new player/departing player messages on the right side of the game screen, seperate from chat messages, while still keeping them all together in the chat window. I don't know if that's even possible, though.
