Some people aren't that rich or they don't tend to spend money just to play an old game they would like to.

Treewyrm Wrote:I'd say that if complete optimizations were to be done it would take throwing off the mod content entirely and starting from ground up with very strict pipeline checks and requirements.
This is true. But, I think an complete hardware optimization for the Discovery would be take too much time, so I would recommend instead to repair the problems that are known.

Everyone is mentioning the thruster particles. Those should be reduced for the sake of FPS while fighting.
As an example, higher number of polygons of New Haven in Connecticut also makes a toll on FPS , but its not just Connecticut , it happens elsewhere aswell.

I might recommend reducing number of polygons on ships or something else to decrease hardware requirements that are already high for a '03 game.

Scumbag Wrote:Guess the mod is nearing it's limits.
Neah, just some optimization would do the job.

Sava Wrote:Don't you think that dev's approach has to be reviewed for the sake of playability?
This question is not intended for me, but I'd say something about it.
Yes, it does, but in a way that they would still care about adding new stuff.

I have second generation i5 processor and having no issues with running freelancer. Not actually even on laptop as well with third gen i5 mobile processor. Freelancer is not optimized for multi thread processing thus the per core performance is important. i5 is working well with it's turbo boost, laptop or desktop - no problems.

Also the use of SSD might be helpful if Freelancer is installed on it. But I don't think those measures are really necessary. Was running on 60 FPS with core i5 2400, ATI video card of 5x HD series with 128 MB RAM and 8 gb of RAM. Perhaps the RAM is the key thing, doubtful tho. If you have less then 40 FPS with hardware configuration like mine then you have some problem aside from hardware, really.

newb pc question: can all of those of us with the swag pack be contributing towards lag? I noticed there are some effects that causes momentary framerate drops with the pack on compared to all graphic enhancements off, could all of these framerate drops combined contribute towards server lag or is that something else entirely?

Effects, models and other yoba stuff is loaded on client only. Server just handles the numbers.

Almost none of the modded ships have different models that render differently at different ranges.
As soon as they come your radar and render they will be their full polygons unlike the vanilla ship.

All you need to run this game smoothly, is a processor with a proper speed in one core.
Rather than duel cores, quad, sixth or whatever else there is.

You don't really need a lot of Ram or a big graphics card for Freelancer.
1,4Ghz duel core is way too slim to deal with old games if it can't use all the cores.

Nope. The polygons on the ship at further distance are minimal. As the ship gets closer, the polygons clear up.Just like approaching a base. They load as the ship gets closer.

Or maybe that has been changed.I don't know.

I am able to use all the cores. For instance, my CPU is equal by L2 Cache with Intel Core i5 2500K.View for information.

As I said, modded ships don't have this.. Vanilla ships do have proper rendering and optimization.

Cache being equal doesn't mean it will perform the same with games such as Freelancer.

And you admitted it was the CPU dragging the rest down already in Skype, so I am not really sure what you're onto with your reply.

It only has 2 Cores more, higher speed, and can be overclocked.

belarusich Wrote:I have i5 processor and GTX650, i had 30-40 FPS in big fights, how do you run game computers made in 2007?

As an example, belarusich does have problems too, or he might be running alot more apps at the same time.

How do you explain that, SeaFalcon ?

If vanilla ships have proper rendering and optimization, why then would someone change the entire polygon rendering to instant when you see a ship ? Maybe my CPU isn't enough to match Freelancer, but hey its from 2003 and my CPU is 2013.Ten years of CPU architecture and developing does make a difference.

Someone made a mistake here.

You really don't need to be rich to get a PC that can run FL smoothly.

Honestly, such a machine would cost around the 275$ (at least here, and here expenses are quite high, so in most other countries I assume prices would be lower).

You don't need to be rich to pull that up.

As for optimizing - it takes lots of work that I doubt anyone in the development team has the time for, for the simple fact the mod is already developing on a slow pace.

Okay.. well didn't think I'd ever see this thread ever but silly me.. The funny thing I see in this is that the GPU matters almost none apparently. As I have had a GTX 260 on this thing for 4 years until I changed it to a 760. (Performance in FL never really changed with that.)

Yet belarusich is having problems in big fights? I've never had any FPS drops in my gaming time. Whether it be Hoover spamming it's guns, or big fights going on. I've witnessed both. (Probably not as many, but for the sake of making a point anyway.)

But I can agree "somewhat" on the fact that older comps are getting crapped on a bit here.. but neither can I really do anything about it. Now can I?

Plus, the mod has been out for it's time already.. Try to redo it and you would take ages. (As mentioned in earlier points made by Treewyrm..)

Though this never ceases to amaze me how actually newer comps are having problems. Hehe... Though, like I said. I can't do much, I can only wonder.
(Or spend probably.. about a day trying to search for all kinds of solutions and thoughts and whatnot facts for EVERYTHING about this and probably simply finding 1/6 of that.. hmm.. I dunno. I'm lazy as hell.)

Hmm.. nope. I can't think again. Damn... inb4 walls of text again.

Ehm.. I think I'll stop here.. yeah.. I think so.
