This means I have to stop all my work, reboot my system, log the game, see there is nothing going on, log out, reboot back to Linux. Most of the time I'd rather just not.

Remember that at first the player list didn't even exist. It only became a thing when Cannon brought it to life. It's merely a service to the community, not a requirement we have to provide.
For years it was used reasonably (note the reasonably), it's only for the past two years or so some people have went out of their way to track and harass specific players every single time they logged, up to making bots dedicated to harassment. It became even worse these past few months. That's not something that can be allowed hence why this slight change was asked to be performed as a trial, if need be we can adjust the region description.
Cloudflare will stay though. I rather give access to the JSON feed to people I can trust with it.
I've got a funny feeling that this is going to cause activity to plummet drastically rather than encourage people to log, but we'll see what happens. It's an interesting change and I'm not discounting it entirely.

I never really said that it's a requirement, however since it does exist I don't exactly see the reason why it should be made less functional. With the current region descriptions it's pretty useless.

I'm quite sure the Discovery Server Watcher stopped working about two years ago and up until that point I don't think I've seen people really complaining that much about it. I actually used it to monitor my own faction activity, to get a poke each time someone from my own faction logged.
And even if people did use some sort of automated software to monitor the server, neither of those changes (removal of system and cloudflare) successfully prevent it because I can still write a bot which would notify me when someone tagged logs on the server.

It's a trial indeed, so we'll see what happens. Nothing is set in stone.

Nothing is more fun than flying around on "patrol" for hour with no encounters, that´s what everybody wants to do on multiplayer server. It´s definitely going to "help" activity in areas like Omicrons or Omegas where player movement is not streamlined at least little by trade lanes and jumpgates like in houses (and which can also be scouted in more reasonable time thanks to trade lanes). I stand by my point that this change will hurt activity in non-house space in major way. Good luck finding anyone in open space with 15K scanner (and range is even reduced in some areas).

I understand your point, and this isn't intended to be a counterpoint (because your argument is valid), but perhaps those people could take this opportunity to actually fly around without a particular aim in mind with a faction member and have a few slice-of-life character interactions with each other. Not only would this provide good opportunity for character development, and yield a more believable encounter if and when a hostile contact shows up, it'll get that faction some tracker hours, too.

The list still wouldn't help you find players within the system, it would only tell you that there are players in it, something that is done by the ingame list at any rate.
Oddly enough Disco's "golden years" were populated by people doing exactly what Petitioner mentioned, literally flying around just to see who would pop up. It'll be a refreshing change to see that again and anything that steers us away from the current "lobby" way of doing things is all the better in my humble opinion.
