In some factions, it's okay, because some actually use callsigns as a naming method.
But yeah, seeing a Freelancer named UltraDeath or some crap like that is a bit .. meh.
By that judgement should I believe that a freelancer is not allowed to have such a callsign, but a CR may ?:P

Names should be in-RP, yes. But you also can't assume some of the more rediculous names going around are nessesarily OORP naming conventions. There could very well be some history beside said name. People use all kinds of names for their ships, from character names to callsigns, to a mixture and even generic names (like the Convoy example, or stuff like Gamma-1).
Carrot to you might seem OORP but maybe the character is Ginger and his wingmates gave him that nickname which is now a callsign for his ship.
Well carrot is a one word (probably callsign?) name, so it doesnt osunds so bad, but then you meet names of characters from other video games or movies, unfortunately I dont remember any but Im sure you know what I mean.
I think such names are perfectly ok when they're callsigns or the pilot's nickname.
Full names are also ok but I think they should be used for 1-person-crafts only.In respect for the crew. :)I myself have a "name-template" for every character.
I don't like to see names of real or fictional persons ingame.Gives me the feeling that people are unimaginative when creating a character and I don't think they fit in the FL universe.
But that's another topic I guess.
A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having
Taking the "Smack" example, sometimes what I'll do is say in system: "This is Covoy-15 returning to base" or something of that nature. I kinda see the names as being what YOU call your ship, so essentially whatever you've painted on the side of the hull.
"The thirteen saloons that had lined the one street of Seney had not left a trace. The foundations of the Mansion House hotel stuck up above the ground. The stone was chipped and split by the fire. It was all that was left of the town of Seney. Even the surface had been burned off the ground.
Nick looked at the burned-over stretch of hillside, where he had expected to find the scattered houses of the town and then walked down the railroad track to the bridge over the river. The river was there."

in sovjet union the ship paints you, (had to say that)
now back to topic,
all my ship/chars have unique names, (with exception of some -.-' )
but I use for fighter/bombers [tag]firstname.lastname
for trade ships [tag]shipname
and for capitals well actualy the same as for trade ships [tag]shipname
