You misunderstand me.
I hear that you are suggesting that helping players tag up one of their characters to help new players.
For instance, Sina tags his [KPT] character [KPT]Sina[help] and new players know to go to him for help on role-play and so on.
What I am saying is, the Administration, in their last edict to [The_Angels] made it very clear that we are to identify ourselves as an OoRP entity which is there to provide help, and that we are not to engage in RP too deeply, if at all. (Basically, just watch, and interject if things go wrong.)
I am saying there is probably a reason why they did this. (Prevent role-playing and helping going together.)
As far as I know, people make [Helper] characters to act as pseudo-Angels since the Angels cannot be online all the time. (But these are identified as completely OoRP entities from the get go.)

I'm not saying that what I'm proposing should replace the Angels - they give the most thorough kind of help available - it's just that something like what I propose gives the opportunity for more people to volunteer to help. There's very little potential for abuse since helpers don't get any added privileges or rights - they're just people that have demonstrated that they understand the various things necessary for a good disco experience and are willing to share that with anyone that asks.
Having people vigilantly looking about for new players is a good thing - it's just that not all of us has the patience for having exclusively new-player-helping ships.
Not unlike what you or anyone else does whenever you see someone fly by with a mismatched ID or bad gun loadouts (just a helpful friendly tip here and there, except now, not only do you help when you see it, you can be asked to be helped by people that need it)
Tag your char like this, use a camera ship and civvy ID. Camera ship explicitly signifies OORP presence.

Since what I have in mind would primarily go on in private chat (something which I should have probably mentioned, sorry), there's no need for any helpers to have any visible oorp aspects other than the tag.
I'm not quite sure why the admins would want to forbid that, since official factions tend to fulfill this capacity for their indies anyway (in the sense that faction indies often ask players with their official faction tag various questions on the gameplay and rp of the faction in question).
' Wrote:Exactly the issue I have is that you view it as pulling 'shifts' instead of just being available while you are free to enjoy the game as you'd like.
It's a noble thing to devote time that could otherwise be spent enjoying yourself to exclusively helping new players - but helping players and enjoying yourself in the game needn't be mutually exclusive.
***EDIT***
What I mean to say is, your availability to the new players can be extended quite a bit if you just incorporate helping new players into what you'd do for fun.
A scenario would be: you're busy trading because that's what lots of people do as part of their normal gameplay - a new player sees the console message that says that people with the tag you've got are volunteers that are willing to help new players out and are able to do so - the new player PMs you and asks you a question and you answer it while you're drifting from lane to lane.
Sure, we do "enjoy ourselves" while we are Angeling - Many, if not most of us do other things while we are on our
Angels.
I think the best solution would be adding two console commands - /findhelp and /sethelper <YES or NO> - The first command gives you a list of the players currently online who have "sethelper" set to YES, and the use of "sethelper" is quite obvious - It tells the server that you are available and/or willing to help.
This saves you the hassle of renaming all of your characters, at least. And is easier to turn on and off. Just a thought.

Oh, it's probably because it's against the rules to shoot at angels, and that since angels can't be shot, it'd be rather silly to let angels do whatever they wished with regards to roleplay.
It makes sense that Angels are to be considered an OORP entity since they're basically helping new players in person (and exist exclusively to do so) and would be severely hampered in this capacity if they were attacked by some inconsiderate person.
This reasoning need not apply to helpers since they're only there to answer questions, and not necessarily in person (and thus would not be incapacitated by getting shot at).

That is a very good idea, but until something like that can be implemented, this is the next best thing.
I meant no disrespect when I said that you didn't enjoy yourselves when you were angeling - I merely meant to say that your gameplay as an angel isn't something you'd want to do in game normally. For instance, angels are not permitted to rp in any deep capacity, nor are they permitted to pvp. They are an exclusively oorp entity, and serve as an 'intensive care' of sorts for newcomers.

When i am angeling, i rarely have the time to see something from the game. Mostly i dont have the time to travel, because of the comms questions.
Also, The_Angels are got asked not only from new players.
As i understand it, you may think, that 'helping' or 'angeling' is only a half-time-job. But mostly, many Angels will know, it is a full-time-job, once you undock.

I think the reason is that when someone sees a ship with a [help] tag on it, they react in a more OOC way to that character, than an IC-way.
It colours an RP interactions before it begins.
Also, read my post more carefully. I know you are not trying to supplant The Angels.

You have time to undock?
Seriously though, I "Angel" on most characters. If I see something wrong I prod someone about it.
