Tanking is about keeping your enemies busy concentrating on you and staying alive while friends shoot those enemies to pieces. Having a more agile ship that easily evades weapons fire is what you might be thinking of.
On a 2 dimensional plane where a person is stuck on his feet with all incoming enemies ganging on him then high armour and hitpoints is needed to sustain what isn`t easily dodgable (which is most of the mob). In space where everything is 3 dimensional it`s easier to move around and thus something like an L takes over the role the tank on the ground did.
' Wrote:You foungt indies right? I would die to see you applie that "tanking" think in Freelancer, wich is a shooter-sim combination in space. Try that on a actual faction. Or in a fight 5vs5 and there are 2 bombers at least. Tanking won't work in FL since in a group fight usualy you focus on the one that can't dodge. Or on the one that deals damage. Me tbh won't focus you for nothing. Since you are no threat for any of our fighters. Sever lags+our own lag=no hit for your missiles. So waht does that mean? Means that a ship like that is kinda useless, only good of it is feeding with bots the valuable pilots. But ofcourse that's only my opinion.
actually it does kinda work how he was sayin it as im in a faction where our statagy is my in my fighter (which looks like an easy kill for 4 vs 1) goes 2 or 3k ahead so as to get all the bad guys to start attacking me then i start dodging like no other while the rest or my faction picks of the other guys one by one.
I've mostly fought indies in Gamma, and actually tanking Arrancas, one of them with a Colada/tizona spam and trying to snac me, and he's the guy I got with mine/missile/cd explosion, it left him at low hull, I think Arrancas count as bombers, don't they?
Still have to find a good faction war to tank though:$, but I think the freighter helps with the "non-evading one" problem, freighters seem slow, and actually are, but if someone learns to fly them, you can make it faster, and actually got faster in the version update, so you can pretty much ruse people on you like that.
Also, for getting people on you, there's the all deb fit on the ship, when somebody else is shooting at other people, you spam their shields down, then they start taking you as annoyance, or at best, as a threat, so they may send at least one guy to get you or you can simply do the same to more and get everyone on you for being so fraking annoying. Oh, and I'm not gonna discuss the missile part, people can use guns, but myself, I'm NEVER using guns again. You just need to make the other guys have a reason to dislike you and really want you down, like a Reinforced CD spam, mining right in front of them, taking their shields down so your party can eat them out of your primaried buddy, etc.

That's EXACTLY what I mean:D

Yeah, I mean, you move, but you're hard as nails too.
I've actually though of having a LF to do it, but seen them as not having enough hardpoints for equipment to get everyone on me.

Yeah I know, but I mean, there's no Aggro in Dungeons and Dragons either, but you can tank by making the mob have a reason to dislike you (see about how to play the Crusader class, it pretty much works this way), like shooting their shield down and being a general annoyance to them, if done good enough, you can turn into a real threat to them, and you'll get primaried and everyone will be on you, so the party can pick them off faster.:D

But that's the thing... actuall players think. Now imagine in WoW that illidan would simply jump on healer right out the bat instead of being busy with a warrior no matter what. And by this one act of will entire party is skrewed. Now I don't know anything about D&D but.. still I can't really imagine how it would be possible to implent something like that. People will change their target as soon as they realise something doesn't work quite well. And nothing is holding them off from doing so.

There's no aggro in there, but just play crusader, put in a stance called "thicket of blades", whoever dares to go around you to hit the party gets hit, then a skill called defensive rebuke, if you ignore me then you get hurt, and that sort of things.
What I mean Is the other guys get punished for ignoring you, like with the Anki, if the guys aren't focused on you, you can debspam on their face, then the rest of the party starts eating his hull, he ignores you?, he's getting eaten (and missiled in my case), guys are pursuing another dude? deb/cd spam them, the party WILL pop them. It's like I said: Give them a reason to want to take on you.;)

You do not deploy gunboats into capfight. :nono:
Solaris cruisers are better at that role. But overall nice tactic, I think i'd even fall into first time if I'd fight you.
My own, very simple version of tanking. more like, normal tank + healer combo.
Say, we're in hamburg. you chose a Rh. BS that will forward, other ones will start a biit behind. Although, thats not important. What's important, is that they should know that there's a repair ship behind their lanes, outside of enemy scanner range, that will cruise up and trade bots when the fight starts and enemy, as always, will start concentrating fire on 1 battleship.
During the intense capfight rare people will notice a tiny cruising ship that appeared behind enemy lanes. But it's very important to let your caps know what's going on, so you can make b/b exchange asap, and, if everything goes well, cruise away.
Expect some heavy Q_Q bombardment. (that is, IF they notice what happened)
If enemy lacks bombers/fighters, you can just try to stay behind the hull of heavies. Beware of missiles, though.
