I think it's fine like it is. I like the idea that it penetrates the hull tehn explodes inside the ship to amplify damage, like putting a firecracker in a closed fist instead of an open hand. Plus I use the LM for gunboats that suck on my exhaust.

If an entire fighter wing was flying that close to each other and didn't dodge the giant turquoise ball of death, they deserve to be popped.

I'm not being sarcastic at all. I think it's stupid that I have to aim at fighters when I can mount something as big as a mortar on my ship. It's a battleship and therefor meant for BATTLE. Fighters are meant for fights, not war. Battles happen in war, so fighters have no place there.
Fights also happen in war but that's more of an urban thing so like in the streets and there are no streets in space except maybe trade lanes but those are more like tubes.
Therefor I agree that it seems reasonable that we add a huge splash effect on mortars so you can shoot at stationary objects and dual fire the things, instantly removing the shields and hull of any snub craft that decided to show up to the party.
After all, if that wasn't an intended feature why can you do it with battle ship missiles? Last time I checked the mortar splash damage light explosion thing was pretty big but for balance reasons I think maybe a 1k explosion radius. But I think NPCs should be invulnerable so I don't mess up my rep by mistake :rtfm:
