This actual discussion was part of one of John Ringo's books, when the United States got it's first operating deep space vehicle. Should it be Air Force or Navy?
So to summarize what was hashed out, Navy wins for deep space vehicles. Air Force can have the puddle jumpers - those craft that are only surface to space, and space interdiction. Everything else belongs to the Navy.
Now, there is actual, real world logic behind this decision as well. Maximum mission duration for an Air Force mission in current, real world technologies - with in-flight refueling and onboard crew rest - is about 48 hours. You simply cannot keep an airplane going continuously for longer than that. Maximum mission duration for a Navy mission in current, real world technology is when they run out of food, fuel, and bullets, they're done - which could take months.
Therefore, who do you want planning your deep space stuff? The guys that can't go anywhere without having to land every few hours, or the guys who can go out, sit at the bottom of the ocean for 2 months, and still do their mission?
This comes up when the A.S.S. Vorpal Blade (Alliance Space Ship - I didn't name it, Ringo did) goes out into the big dark with their load of Space Marines. I highly recommend "Into the Looking Glass" and the remainder of his series. Who knows? Get some real science fiction into you guys, you may actually start figuring out how to role-play as NAVY pilots, and maybe learn a little astro-physics while you're at it.

I think I'll be looking that one up too. As for the physics... Mostly I don't bother with it in my RP, because FL makes a laughingstock of the science to begin with.
For a space faring people with the ability to project such force with the necessary support of naval vessels such as carriers, it seems a tad redundant to have an "air force" patrolling around space independently without such support.
What need would there be for an "air force", a single cohesive organization called the "air force", for such a people?
Marines and Navy go hand in hand there has <to the best of my knowledge> allways been a marine garrasion in some way shape or form on any ship ever to sail it only makes sense for the same in space
the air force concepct could be the intra system garrasions of each planet or something mainil sub orbital to high orbits/intra system
but i dont see you running say a liberty carrier or anything
