Only thing I can remember that closely resembles the term 'tanking' is Pavel physically placing his KuBs between 3 Ranseurs and 2 Zephyrs, basically taking the damage.

The only tanking in disco is the above example of the KuBS.
You say you tanked, yet unlike WoW, skills have more impact on the outcome of a battle. The anki may be agile compared to other freighters perhaps, but it's still a freighter, 2 decent fighter pilots will kill you.
Sure, you buy some time for your friends, yet it all depends on the skill of the enemy. The better their aiming is, the faster you'll die. Lets not forget their own evading skills, remember, they're harder to hit than you are, so..technically, they're tanking as well, according to your description.
But yeah, skills.
You could perhaps get an LF and annoy everyone, and tank that way, yet the enemy, sooner or later will see they're wasting their time and switch to an easier target.

Um....Actually the Anki as Freighter.....isn't.....
And when I used it in gamma I've had a frakload of fighters and ossies on me, didn't get owned:unsure:

yeah the aiming part is important, but also your evasion skills, the better the enemie's aiming the faster they can frag you, but the better your evasion skills the harder you are to pop, when you tank in Disco, you only get scratches when they hit you, that's if they hit you.

In every group fight I've been, what they're just doing is trying to not get blown up after they're primaried, that's actually diferent from tanking.
When you Defend you're just using defensive skills for not getting blow up; when you Tank you're deliberatelly getting everyone on you on purpose and using your defensive skills to keep them on. So most tanking they would've doing is for themselves anyways:lol:

Real tanking is for caps, large caps.
Oh I actually though of getting a LF for tanking too!
been checking around though, and haven't found a LF with enough hardpoints for both shieldtaunting and hullthreating, So it would just be like a Rogue or something like that, with a high evasion and being hard to hit because of it.
And though of the cap tanking too, but have to be in faction, and extremely fraking expensive.
I almost got my ass whopped today by a guy in a marauder presenting himself as an easy target, and I was in a sabre (I am only just starting how to use a fighter properly - I made A LOT of mistakes). He would act as bait (I even arrived at the scene late and got offered 2 million SC to kill him by a rogue and a merc sitting right there in bombers while this guy was taunting them) and he also let me take his shield easily and while I was eager to move in for the kill he would dodge and slowly bring down my shield and then wham! throw a nuke mine in my face on a pass where I thought the kill was mine. He was extremely good at using mines/setting them off with cd's and really good at dodging (and I am a terrible aim on top of that). He humiliated me by chasing me across an entire populated system with my sabre in flames.
I know this technique wont work if the opponent knows whats going on and makes adjustments fast (and keeps his head cool - I spammed like 70 missiles and all my cd's in the first 2 minutes of the fight), but you can certainly bring down a lot of inexperienced fighter pilots easily like this. And because you can take down an opponent fast if you hit him with several nukes you can get all the regens. But it requires a lot of skill and lack thereof in the opponent.
It's not "tanking" in the traditional sense, but it can keep one or more opponents (especially if they are in heavy bombers) occupied for some time, and in that way serve the purpose of the tank in games like WoW.
EDIT: In group battles this technique becomes sort of obsolete though, as everybody would switch targets to something else within 30 seconds (I pirated a battle transport while dodging the guy with the mines for a while because I knew I would never whack him).
' Wrote:What you do with Anki is attracting fire, not tanking per se.
Attracting fire is part of Party Tanking, Party Tanking is attracting fire and deliberate using your defensive skills to not get overwhelmed.
I actually use the Anki debs as a taunt, as picking random people and eating their shields, then my entire party eats them, then I keep using it on everybody until I get their atention, if I don't then they'll lose the shield easier since they would've busy with someone else, and would get CD'd as frak, so it still would've a lose-lose situation for them, as a way to punish for not paying attention to me, it's not that hard. Tanking is being extremely hard to kill, Party Tanking is using your extremely hardness to drag fire out of your party
@Peter_Dingo
Marauder is awesome too!
I don't exactly know how they do in tanking, but seeming how that guy did it seems to be ptretty awesome at it too.
Had a wasupu and after I bough it I was like "Aw man I hope I didn't waste money.....OH MAH GOODNESS THIS THING'S SO FAST!!". fast is good
Well, I guess we both have our opinions.
Using Anki and not being shot quickly, bad aim on other side. Against caps, well, no way you can survive even fragment of time if they can aim.

It doesn't necesarily mean the other guys have a bad aim if you can evade with an Anki, the Anki's pretty fast for being a freighter, you may have good evasion skills too.
And I used it against ossies too, the deb spam can lower cruiser shields, didn't exactly notice if they could lower Battleship shields or not, but I tanked an ossie or 2 off the SCRA too, and didn't get poped:D
