When I took my trade routes, the biggest fun was to RP with other ppl. The autopilot didn't change that. But of course, it depends on how you play.
Yu are right, I was too lazy to click the trade lane ring, then to press dock, then the jump gate, the ring, dock, ring, dock, etc. for hours (like a machine :P). So I just turned on the autopilot.
But when a pirate crossed my way, the adrenaline pushed through my veins, taking back the control of my ship, and trying to somehow get out of that place (most often by paying the bad guy:crazy:).
If ppl want to do RP, then they will do it. But if you think an autopilot would destroy the ground for playing good RP, I have no problems to respect this.
The space is big and sometimes its also very empty.
Actually , part from the fact that this is cheating,
a integrated autopilot function for transports and caps would be nice in my opinion.
It would make the big ships feel more like big ships , with a captain giving orders that the crew follows.
This would give the player more time to RP during long flights,
given the fact that you got more time to type.
It would need heavy tweaking though , It would need weaknesses and something to prevent it from being used while afk.
Also it should only be usable with tradelanes.
I think this would increase the amount of traders , and it would get me back in a trading ship for sure , since i love to drink coffee and command a ship like a real captain would.
Ofcourse I've read all the negative remarks about this , and I really agree with most of those points too,
simply trying to shed a different (thinking out of the box) light on it , maybe as a future feature that's well integrated.
@Paywhy , if you are good with coding and stuff maybe you could offer your services to help out Cannon and the other devs.
I think they can use someone with coding skills.
@Madvillain
I stopped/paused playing freelancer some weeks ago. I am not one of that guys having too much time. But I login to the sever now and then, to prevent the deletion of my accounts on the RP server. I think I will just keep this discussion in my mind, until I can go back to game again.
In trains, they have buttons, the driver has to press from time to time. Maybe randomly 20 to 30 minutes, and the autopilot will require a life sign. I am thinking about an acustic signal, and you have 20 seconds to press a button. If you dont press the button in that time window of 20 secs, the autopilot will go mad (and steer the ship into the next sun, sending out jokes about chuck norris into space meanwhile ; )
Juck norris doesn't need an autopilot, cos he can fly through anything:cool:
I love the deadsman switch idea.
You should check Cannon and the Dev team definitely.
This game/community is so absurd and idiotic at times that have its own charm making me and others to post stuff in forum from work for example,it deserves more features.
Fixing the line fail docks and the retarded autopilot together with the retarded 2-3 min docking would be great.

as much as i think this is a cool thing to do i believe it still violates server rules. as others have said before me this is a RP server and should be played as such. your butt in the chair in front of the screen.

Well if his intention was to break the rules etc, he wont go publicly with that you know...
It is fact that the auto-pilot in game is bad and that many ships got stucked in the lines and bases.
Such small fails make the game not so funny. Proper tweaking and integrating of this code would be good thing.

Docking tradelane issues are mostly due to the shipsize, bigger ships have been added, but the game mechanics have not changed. Want to fly a big ship? Face the consequences. Ever tried to park a hummer in a regular parking space (that is not in the usa)?
The idea is really interesting, but the first thing i thought of was that is cheating as well. Apart from the fact that this is an rp server, you are expected to put some effort in it, to eventually get enough cash. Skipping that part is not fair against players who do not use it.
(Actually, the firs thing i thought of was picking up on diablo2 again, with a bot:))
I remember the good 4.85 times when the same big ships have no problems in asteroids or in lines or exploding on undock or whatever problems.
Now half of the caps and transps are totally screwed for unknown reasons, but the result is clear the activity in server is 30-40% less compared with that days.

Although this is filed under cheating, perhaps we can re-work it and integrate it into the game?
Maybe adding a feature where any shot will disable autopilot due to energy blasts interfering with the delicate processes going on?
And because of the toll it takes on the ship's systems, after disengaging auto-pilot, the ship is unable to move or shoot for around 20 seconds or so?
This will make sure that any pirate will get the upper hand when he encounters an auto-piloted ship. A simple shot will ensure the trader is a sitting duck next to a tradelane.
Btw what happens if you are killed? You need to stay away from the system for 4 hours. If the scipt ignores that, you are effectively breaking the rules, right?
