I couldn't disagree more. Skill has so much more to do with a fight than equipment. The game is fairly balanced, and the little advantages here and there don't effect pilots of equal skill much at all.

Noted.
I couldn't disagree more with your disagreement. Once you reach a certain level of skill (which I have not attained, truth be told), I think having advantages like a more agile ship or more powerful guns will make a notable difference on the average.
But, I might be way off. I'm no pvp expert, but, thankfully, it's not really why I'm here. (smoke)
Not really. I've found that not wanting to die can push me to last as much as another 10 minutes. A lot can happen in 10 minutes.
And it's not about dying, as it is about gaining experience, which means going through the entire 'engage-fight-die' process.
And yes it will take a lot of time. This can't be changed, Freelancer isn't a game based on virtual skills, but your own skill with the mouse and keyboard, being aware of what's going on around you, and understanding the game's physics.
Do as i did. Fly a Colector against xenos in Eagles. Do this for awhile and believe me, after awhile when you jump into a good fighter you will rock.
Learn on a bad fighter, and then goto good fighter. Learn on a good fighter, and you will be relying to much on ship, more then skill.

I noticed that after I wiped out my Sabres, now it is eagle time.:nyam:
Collector and barragers are terrible.
